USDA just accused the two biggest corporations controlling America’s fertilizer industry of “collusion” to limit supply, control prices, and drive up farmers’ costs.

And they declared that the administration is ready to take action to break up this corrupt duopoly.

Nutrien and Mosaic control “more than 90% of North American phosphate fertilizer and potash production.”

Meanwhile, “just seven companies control 70% of crop input sales, including Nutrien Ag Solutions, the retail business of Nutrien.”

Deputy Agriculture Secretary Stephen Vaden called Nutrien and Mosaic’s iron grip on the market a “duopoly” that is constraining America’s fertilizer supply and driving up costs for farmers.

Mosaic and a “slate of other fertilizer companies—including Agrium and PotashCorp, which merged to form Nutrien”—already faced allegations of price fixing back in the 2010s.

Settling those lawsuits cost them tens of millions of dollars.

Now, Vaden is “closely watching” a new project to open a fertilizer mine in Saskatchewan, Canada that plans to export to the US and could “break up that duopoly’s control.”

Read our full investigation into consolidation in the fertilizer industry below, and find out how the monopolization of this market is strangling farmers across America:https://farmaction.us/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Fertilizer_Farm-Action.pdf

The Kansas Department of Agriculture is seeking feedback from Kansans for the 2026 Kansas Custom Rates Survey to collect information on rates paid for agricultural custom work. The survey is administered through the Kansas State University Land Use Survey Office and will be open through March 31, 2026.

This survey collects data on charges for custom harvesting, land work, haying, feed preparation and machinery rental. Whether you provide custom services or you hire custom services, knowing accurate, competitive prices can be crucial for the sustainability of agricultural operations. Completion of the survey should take about 15 minutes.

“We view the Kansas Custom Rates Survey as a very valuable tool for farmers, ranchers and agribusinesses to access as they consider contracts and agriculture service arrangements,” said Secretary Mike Beam. “KDA works to provide support and assistance to help make Kansas agriculture more successful, and we are pleased to partner with K-State to publish this biennial survey.”

The 2026 Kansas Custom Rates Survey is voluntary, anonymous and confidential. To complete the survey, please visit www.tinyurl.com/custom26. If you are unable to complete the online survey but wish to participate, please contact Dr. Leah Tsoodle, Director, Land Use Survey Office, at [email protected] or Heather Greer Johnson, KDA economist, at 785-564-6726 or [email protected] to receive a written survey or to complete the survey over the telephone.

The Kansas Custom Rates Survey is a collaborative effort between the KDA Division of Agriculture Marketing and the Land Use Survey Office within the Department of Agricultural Economics at K-State.

Growers are often surprised to see how much even early and small weeds can permanently affect crop yield. W**d control in sorghum remind me off the days before glyphosate.
