I'm a mechanical engineer with 5+ years of experience designing thousands of unique parts and assemblies for CNC machining, Additive Manufacturing, and more.
I started Wolfpack Workshop a year and a half ago, and we're growing every day with the capabilities that we offer and the projects we're diving into.

What do you do when people KEEP ASKING for a capability that you don’t have? 🧐

You add it!

Happy to announce we are now up-and-running with in-house 3D scanning capabilities! 😁

For those interested (nerds like me 🤓), this is basically how a 3D scanner works:

A laser 3D scanner can take point cloud data from the surface of any part, and bring it into CAD for measurement and reverse engineering.

The 3D scanner shoots the lasers. (LASERS ARE AWESOME! 😎)

The cameras on the scanner see the lasers.

Based off of where it sees the lasers, it knows where to put the points.

The points can be turned into a 3D mesh.

And the 3D mesh can be precisely measured and approximated in CAD.

The CAD model can be manufactured, or used to design a complementary part.

That, in a nutshell, is how a laser 3D scanner works!

I've learned that motivation comes and goes. These 3 things help me stay excited about what I do. 😁

1. I like to continually invest in new equipment and keep a running list of the next “expansion step” for Wolfpack. This not only helps the company grow our capabilities, but also lets me nerd out 🤓 and learn new stuff.

2. I allow myself to do personal projects with my work machines. If you can’t think of a way to have fun with your work, then whatcha doin?!

3. Surround yourself with others who care about your work, and are genuinely interested. Sharing updates and accomplishments with people who care is great, because you can celebrate together!

Just a few simple things that go a long way, when the grind can feel hard sometimes.

Did you know that it’s now SUPER EASY to apply textures to SLA & FDM 3D prints?

This SLA printed building is part of the the Old Dublin architectural model project I introduced in my last post. This building showcases the incredible detail that I’ve been able to capture on my Formlabs Form 4L machine.

I’m a mechanical design engineer, and I work mostly with parametric models (which means I don’t typically sculpt, animate, or work with many organic surfaces).

So when I learned that a new software had just been released that would allow me to apply any texture to my models, I dove right in! 💦

To create this detail, I use a service called Bumpmesh. Bumpmesh was created by Stefan Hermann of CNC Kitchen (one of my favorite maker Youtube channels).

Something that’s cool about Bumpmesh is that it’s completely free, and browser-based, so you don’t have to download any apps. It has some stock default textures, but you can also upload any picture and it will extract the texture from the picture. You then can apply the texture to any model you want.

Bumpmesh is also very versatile. You can adjust so many things, like smoothness, texture size, texture height, texture orientation, location, and much more! It’s the perfect tool for a project like this, where the walls need to have textures such as stone, brick, siding, or shingles. Some other applications of this same software could be: adding surface roughness on parts for grip, or to give certain aesthetic finishes.

I’m just happy I discovered Bumpmesh and I wanted to share how helpful it’s been for this project, and I’m sure many more to come!
