A lot of folks think: “Engine oil is made under stricter standards than trimmer grease. If it’s good enough for my car’s engine, it should be more than good enough for a little string trimmer, right?”
I used to think the same way. But after digging into the science – and nearly ruining a perfectly good trimmer – I learned the hard way that car oil and trimmer grease are NOT the same thing.
Here’s what happens when you put 5W-30 in that gear head:
❌ It’s too thin – gets flung off in seconds by high RPMs
❌ Can’t handle the heat – trimmers run 250–300°F inside, engine oil breaks down much earlier
❌ No staying power – it leaks, burns, and leaves your gears grinding metal‑on‑metal
Meanwhile, the right grease (the kind made for power tools) can handle over 400°F and sticks to the gears like it should.
So before you grab that leftover quart from the garage…

If you own a string trimmer (also known as a w**d wacker or strimmer), you know that regular maintenance is the secret to a long-lasting machine. When that gearhead starts sounding dry or grinding, the natural instinct is to grab the nearest lubricant in the garage—usually something meant for the ...
