Our 12th Man is outfitted with a laser-based distance sensor to make sure our Rocky Mountain Water that feeds it never runs dry. Your 12th Man could be an oil rig, a waste bin, a manhole cover, a water trough, a sharps bin needle, or even a giant vat of metal shards. KST has experience measuring all these things and more with our trusty distance sensor technology powered by . Feel free to watch our joint webinar with ST to learn more, contact us today to brainstorm your non-contact distance sensing requirement, or take a peek at our 12th’s Man water level real-time on our live demo dashboard website. Last week, KST proudly renewed our Membership as a Company with the LoRa Alliance! Every year this comes up, we give thought as to whether or not to renew, but with the LoRa Alliance, it is a “no brainer” for us? Why?
Standards promote interoperability. It’s still magical to us when we get to design and build our own LoRaWAN Sensors and then see them work with Gateways, Cloud Portals, and Machine Learning solutions that we’ve never even thought of before! Standards make that happen.
Alliances promote community. As a result of being a member, we have had the chance to participate in amazing events put on by the LoRa Alliance itself or even other companies that we have met through the alliance. We have literally built relationships as a result of being members of the same organization. Why not go to Munich soon and see what a Event has to offer?
Communities promote solutions. The IoT is an “all you can eat buffet”, and it’s totally fun for KST to partner with companies we could have never dreamed to have partnered with before. This has allowed us to create whole solutions or participate as a critical piece in a much broader context. Solutions are the driving economic force behind our business and allow us to innovate beyond ourselves.

- Proud Member of the LoRa Alliance.

How should an IoT device provide a great user experience? Typically, these devices are small, power efficient, have some degree of water and dust ingress protection, and are incredibly limited in terms of displays and buttons. Even worse, a person typically interacts with an IoT device when they first turn it on and provision it, rarely during the normal life of the product, and intensely when the battery needs replacing or recharging. For IoT Devices, striking the balance between a complex task like provisioning and an infrequent task like battery replacement is challenging. Avoiding long and complex blink sequences is also advisable. At , we’ve always struggled with these design tradeoffs. Soon, we will be launching a new BLE device where we have an IP67 enclosure that must accept input from a person while giving them helpful feedback. In this product, we’ve opted for an external membrane keyboard with embedded RGB LEDs. The notations are simple to read and international. By forming light pipe lenses that represent familiar shapes, like that of a battery, we can easily communicate basic ideas .Just because you have an inexpensive, ingress protected IoT Device does not mean you need to compromise on user experience. Contact us today to brainstorm how this can be accomplished in your product and to ask about our own experiences building custom, external keyboards with LED indicators.

We strongly advise some sort of pre-certification testing of your products before sending them to a third party test lab for verification in preparation for submission to the various wireless certification bodies you may be considering (such as the FCC or IC). At , we have a standard firmware load that we place on our products and our customer’s products in preparation for certification. Often, we will need to do both radiated and conducted tests on products before they hit production. can perform sample preparation services, which involves at least putting firmware on your device that will give the certification test house the ability to put your product into various modes, such as a constant carrier wave mode, to ensure they comply with the legal limits for emission. For conducted tests, we often have to get very creative with RF Cabling and modifying the product enclosure just enough to get a standard RF Connector, such as an SMA, to the outside world for connection to Test and Measurement Equipment. Sample prep, pre-screening, and managing the certification test house are just some of the services we’re happy to provide for your product. Contact us today for details on how we can help move your product one step closer to production by executing this very important step of the Product Lifecycle Process!

“Hey, , we want our product to be waterproof!” We frequently hear this request from our customers. There are tons of great articles out there talking about how to quantify your needs here for both particulate and water ingress into your enclosures. At KST, we work with our customers to understand the end application and can provide guidance on what is appropriate for your enclosure. We work with independent, third party labs here in Colorado to have a second set of eyes on your products and ours before we usher them into production. And, nothing beats a little pre-certification testing. Pictured is a water tank system we developed that allows us to pre-test water ingress on your products. Contact us today so we can have a conversation about Ingress Protection (IP) ratings and to see how we can lend a hand with the tough balance between a complex and expensive enclosure design and your needs to protect against particulates or water.
