Well… that’s a wrap. ❤️🔨

Clinton Hardware is officially closed, and David’s long, winding, sometimes exhausting, sometimes hilarious road to retirement has finally come to an end.

Over the past several months, we’ve shared stories about customers, employees, vendors, friends, family, and all the little moments that made Clinton Hardware so much more than just a hardware store.

We’ve told stories about only a VERY small percentage of people who truly meant the world to us and helped make Clinton Hardware what it was. There are literally thousands of stories we could have told… and probably a few we shouldn’t have told! 😂

We shared David’s messages and thoughts as he took each step toward that final closing of the doors. We shared the staff happenings, the laughs, the craziness, the tears, and all those little behind-the-scenes moments that usually stayed between us.

And through it all, YOU came along for the ride.

From the bottom of our little tool cabinet hearts, THANK YOU. ❤️

Thank you for reading, laughing with us, reminiscing with us, sharing your own memories, and reminding us over and over again just how special Clinton Hardware was.

Now we’re going to take a short Facebook break. We need a little time to let this past year sink in, catch our breath, wipe the dust off, figure out what retirement actually looks like, and start writing the next chapters of our lives.

But don’t worry…

WE’LL BE BACK! 😉

In a few weeks, we’ll have some exciting announcements about:

Thank you to every customer, friend, neighbor, and community member who supported us—not just during our closing, but throughout all the years.

🐴 JOE, NICK & PISCATAWAY HORSE FARM 🐴

Some customers you remember because of what they bought. Others you remember because of the people they are. Joe and Nick Edelen from Piscataway Trails, LLC Horse Farm are definitely the second kind. ❤️

For as long as we can remember, Clinton Hardware has kept Piscataway Horse Farm supplied with the essentials — wheelbarrows, rope, garden hoses and chain that you need when you're running a horse farm! 🐴

Nick was usually back at the farm keeping an eye on things, while Joe was the one who would stop into Clinton Hardware to grab whatever was needed to fix a fence, replace a hose that had seen better days, or take care of whatever the farm had managed to break that week. 😂

And Joe never just came in for supplies.

He flirted with the cashiers, joked around with the guys, and always had a smile on his face. You knew when Joe walked through the door, you were going to get a little conversation along with whatever he came to buy!

Joe and Nick grew up right here in Clinton and now run the horse farm their father, Joe, started. They are two of the friendliest guys around and the kind of people who are always willing to help somebody else.

We even remember one particularly cold winter when Joe bought a heater from us — not because he needed a heater, but because someone else needed one. That's just the kind of guys they are.

And now that Clinton Hardware is officially closed and we actually have a little free time on our hands...

Maybe NOW we can finally take you up on that horseback ride you guys have been telling us to come down for all these years!

Thank you, Joe and Nick. We are lucky to have called you customers — and even luckier to call you friends. ❤️

One Last Week at Clinton Hardware ❤️

We spent this past week dismantling, cleaning, hauling, sorting, reminiscing… and basically taking apart everything that made Clinton Hardware feel like Clinton Hardware so we could turn the building over to its new owners.

And let us tell you… it was exhausting. 😂

We went home every day tired, dirty, sore, and probably shedding a tear or two along the way. There were plenty of moments when we stopped and looked around and thought, “Wow… this really is happening.”

But, just like everything else at Clinton Hardware, we did it together.

There were laughs.
There was plenty of picking on each other.
There were stories we had heard a hundred times before.
There were probably a few arguments over where something was supposed to go. 😉
And, of course, there was a whole lot of fun mixed in with the hard work.

After 80 years of Clinton Hardware, the store is now just a building.

The shelves are gone.
The counters are gone.
The merchandise is gone.
The familiar sounds and faces that filled those walls for so many years are gone.

But Clinton Hardware isn't really gone
Because the memories, the friendships, the customers, the employees, the laughs, the stories, the good days, the crazy days, and all the people who walked through those doors will always be a part of that building.

We may have turned over the keys, but we could never turn over the memories.

The building belongs to the new owners now.
But Clinton Hardware will always be a part of that building — and a part of all of us. ❤️

McCall’s Plumbing was one of the very first customers to walk through the doors of Clinton Hardware after Clyde Billman purchased the business from Mr. Ripple!

Clyde was a businessman, and apparently he didn’t waste much time getting down to business! 😂 He quickly talked Brian McCall into opening a Clinton Hardware house account for his plumbing business. And that account was opened some 60 YEARS AGO! 😳

Fast forward six decades, and McCall’s Plumbing was one of the very last house accounts we closed out ,

Through all those years, Clinton Hardware and McCall’s Plumbing have always supported one another. They were one of our top plumbing referrals when customers came into the store looking for someone they could trust.

And it didn’t matter if it was Brian, his son Kevin and wife Rachel, or any of their employees stopping in for supplies — you could pretty much guarantee there would be laughs, some picking on each other, and usually a little bit of nonsense before they walked back out the door! 😂

That’s what made Clinton Hardware so special. It wasn’t just about selling plumbing supplies… it was about the relationships that lasted decades.

From Brian walking through our doors all those years ago, to Kevin and Rachel continuing the family business, we are so grateful that McCall’s Plumbing has been part of the Clinton Hardware story for more than 60 years. ❤️

💙 TWO SMALL BUSINESSES… ONE BIG FRIENDSHIP 💙

Today is a pretty bittersweet day at Clinton Hardware as Garlic Sensations made its LAST Friday stop in our parking lot.

Two small businesses. Two completely different businesses. Two completely different men.

But somehow, we just worked. ❤️

Several years ago, Vincent approached David about bringing his food truck to the Clinton Hardware parking lot. David said yes, arrangements were made, and the rest, as they say, is history.

What started as a simple business agreement turned into so much more.

Garlic Sensations helped make our parking lot a known stop for food trucks, and Fridays quickly became something we all looked forward to. But somewhere along the way, it became about more than food trucks and hardware.

It became David and Vincent.

Two guys from completely different worlds, talking business, sharing advice, sending customers to each other, lending a hand when the other needed it, picking on each other a little… okay, maybe sometimes A LOT… but most importantly, becoming friends.

They each had their own business to run, but they shared the same goal — to serve their customers the very best they could.

So when that Garlic Sensations truck pulls out of the Clinton Hardware parking lot today for the very last time, it's going to feel just a little more empty around here.

As if emptying out our store this week wasn't hard enough. 😢

We are incredibly thankful for the years of Fridays, the food, the laughs, the conversations, the friendship, and all the memories.

Thank you, Vincent, for being such a big part of Clinton Hardware's story. We couldn't have written this chapter without you.

THE CASHIER COUNTER’S FINAL CLEANOUT! 😂

Today the cashiers cleaned out the cashier counter for the LAST time… and let’s just say, there were some mixed emotions. 😭😂

Out came the well-loved cashier’s book — the one that has survived YEARS of tax-exempt numbers, business recommendations, phone numbers, notes, reminders, mysterious scribbles, and probably a few things nobody can remember why they wrote down in the first place. 😂

There was something strangely satisfying about finally being able to toss it. After all those years, it has officially earned its retirement!

BUT… we did discover one important lesson during the cleanout:

Maybe next time the guys shouldn’t leave their demolition tools laying around. 🤔

Because when the girls find hammers, crowbars and other demolition equipment… WE PUT THEM TO USE TOO! 😂😂😂

Let’s just say that cashier counter didn’t stand a chance.

Some Friendships Last 50 Years! ❤️🔨

Every once in a while, someone walks through the door at Clinton Hardware and brings back a whole lot of memories.

Roger from R&F Metals stopped by while he was in town checking on the company. Roger doesn’t even live in Maryland anymore, but he made a point of stopping at Clinton Hardware to thank David and Dennis for all the years of doing business together — and, of course, for the friendships that came along with it. ❤️

R&F Metals is celebrating 50 years in business this year, making them another one of those long-standing Clinton small businesses that have been part of the community for generations.

Roger was also one of Clinton Hardware’s oldest house accounts, originally set up by Clyde Billman. And if you’ve been around Clinton for a while, you might even remember when R&F Metals had one of their sample vinyl porch displays sitting out front of the store! 😂

That’s the thing about running a small-town hardware store for all these years. You don’t just collect customers — you collect friendships, memories and stories.

Thanks for stopping by, Roger. It meant a lot to David and Dennis that you made Clinton Hardware one of your stops. And congratulations to R&F Metals on 50 years! 🎉

❤️ Joe & Peggy — Two of the Nicest People You Could Ever Meet

Joe and Peggy were two of those people who became so much more than customers—they became part of the Clinton Hardware family.

Joe practically lived in our nuts & bolts aisle while restoring his old red truck. 😂 We're pretty sure he spent more on nuts and bolts than that truck was ever worth! It was definitely an odd week if Joe didn’t show up looking for just a few more nuts & bolts.

And when Peggy came along, you knew she was in the building because you were always greeted with the biggest, happiest “HELLO DARLING!” ❤️ You couldn't help but smile when Peggy walked through the door.

And then there was Peggy’s sister, who was another one of those unforgettable Clinton Hardware customers. She was in the store all the time before she passed, usually working on a project, fixing up a yard-sale find, or picking up something to help someone who needed it more than she did. That was just the kind of person she was.

Joe and Peggy are exactly the kind of people who made this place special. They didn't just come in to shop—they brought their personalities, their stories, their projects, and a whole lot of friendship through our doors.

Those are the customers we'll remember long after the last nut and bolt has left the building. ❤️🔩
