There has been a few questions about fitting steering racks into 124s. So here is a kind of short answer and the "how to"....
- yes you can and it is a lot of work and money
- different or modify your crossmember with brackets to hold the rack
- remove steering box and install custom steering link from rack to column
- completely custom down pipe to clear the rack because it is literally in the way
- modify outer X tie rods to fit (honestly this part is easy)
- and a few other little nothing burgers

Overall it is a pretty hard job and costs lots to do.

You would probably be better served in most cases maintaining your steering box and steering idler. We find most people do not even know that you should be maintaining these items. Odds are they are ruined by now but that is okay because new steering boxes and steering idlers are readily available.

New Steering box and idler - a little over $500
Converting to Steering Rack - probably close to $2000 unless you do a lot of the work yourself in creating some of the parts to lower the cost.
