In December 2025, we wrapped up an important private road creek crossing upgrade and stream restoration project in Tumwater, WA—improving long-term access for residents while restoring natural stream function for better fish passage and connectivity.
Our crews built a temporary gravel access road, removed the existing 9-foot-diameter CMP culvert, more than 120 eco blocks, large concrete slabs, and associated fill and armoring, and installed a 90-foot-long aluminum structural plate underpass provided by the contracting agency. The stream channel was reconstructed through the new structure with pools, meander bars, and habitat features, and supplemented with rootwad logs downstream. Following installation, the structure was backfilled, the private road was rebuilt, temporary access was removed, and disturbed areas were fully restored.
This project required tight sequencing, strong erosion and sediment control, and constant adjustments due to limited access and record-breaking rain events that increased flows during construction. Congratulations to our project team for delivering quality work under tough conditions while keeping safety first—this is true East Slope quality, built the right way.

East Slope Earthworks successfully completed the Merrill Lake Slide Mitigation Project in Cowlitz County, Washington finishing in Nov of 2025. The project scope included producing, hauling, and placing aggregate materials from the State-owned N-3000 Quarry to stabilize an active landslide area at the terminus of Forest Road 7634. In total, our crews produced and placed 5,800 cubic yards of Quarry Spalls to construct the required rock buttress, exceeding the original 5,000 cubic yards planned due to field-verified needs and changing site conditions.
Work also included improvements to approximately 1,100 linear feet of access road, installation of new roadway culverts, full clearing and grubbing of the construction footprint, excavation of 2,900 cubic yards of soil, and construction of a complete perimeter drainage system. The drainage scope included installation of a 350 cubic yard drainage blanket designed to intercept groundwater seepage and protect the slope from further instability.
The project required careful planning and ex*****on due to exceptionally challenging conditions, including steep terrain, limited work area, saturated soils, restricted access, and record-setting rainfall events. Despite these constraints, the East Slope Earthworks team delivered the project safely and in accordance with the project specifications. Congratulations to the entire project team for maintaining the highest safety standards while completing high-risk work in extreme conditions.

The Cottage Lake Creek Weir Removal and Stream Restoration Project involved the complete removal of an old concrete weir and the restoration of the creek to a more natural and functional state. The work began with clearing and grubbing of the site, followed by a full creek diversion to safely isolate the work area. Approximately 350 cubic yards of native material were excavated and exported to reshape the channel and reestablish a natural stream profile. Managing the large-diameter diversion pipe running through the middle of the site added an additional layer of difficulty, especially with unpredictable and uncontrolled flow fluctuations throughout construction.
To rebuild the stream-bed and enhance aquatic habitat, a total of 330 tons of imported stream-bed gravels and cobbles were placed throughout the newly shaped channel. The restoration also included the purchase and installation of twenty-nine pieces of large woody debris, each carefully positioned to promote habitat complexity and channel stability. These were secured with a total of fifty-three Manta Ray earth anchors, providing long-term strength and resilience under varying flow conditions. In addition to the in-stream work, East Slope Earthworks constructed a gravel walking path, built wood stairs providing access down to the creek, and installed one hundred twenty-five feet of split rail cedar fencing to improve the site’s functionality and appearance.
Despite the project’s technical challenges, the work was completed safely, efficiently, and to the owner’s satisfaction. The collaboration with the project owner was excellent, and East Slope Earthworks looks forward to future opportunities to work together on similar restoration efforts.

Marblemount Fish Hatchery Waterline Replacement: Work performed under this contract included the removal and replacement of existing 36-inch and 24-inch steel rearing pond supply lines with new HDPE pipe of the same diameters. A total of 700 linear feet of 36-inch HDPE pipe and 800 linear feet of 24-inch HDPE pipe were installed, replacing aging steel infrastructure that served critical fish-rearing facilities.
The scope of work also included cultural resources monitoring, ensuring that all excavation and ground disturbance were conducted in compliance with environmental and historical preservation standards. Additional project elements included the removal and replacement of 396 linear feet of chain-link fencing, repaving of disturbed areas, and importing select backfill material while disposing of unsuitable native soils on site.
One of the project’s defining challenges was the August 1st deadline for completing and commissioning the 36-inch HDPE line, which was essential to maintain continuous water supply for fish operations. The crew met this deadline through exceptional coordination and efficiency. Working with large-diameter HDPE pipe presented unique technical challenges—particularly its tendency to expand and contract with temperature changes. The team also managed water seepage from the rearing ponds and addressed several unforeseen field changes with practical, field-based solutions.
Despite these complexities, the project was completed safely, on time, and to specification. The crew’s performance, adaptability, and commitment to quality were outstanding. Working with the owner was a pleasure—they were professional, cooperative, and engaged throughout the process. We look forward to collaborating on future projects together.

This project involved replacing aging storm infrastructure and improving drainage across several locations on Bainbridge Island, including NE Murden Cove Drive, Manitou Beach Drive NE, Weaver Road NW, and Irene Place NE. Crews installed new storm pipe and structures and replaced deteriorating cross culverts at Silven Avenue NW, NE Torvanger Road, and—under an additive alternate—Meadowmeer Circle NE and Misty Vale Place NE.

Work was performed under tight site constraints and heavy traffic conditions, requiring precise coordination, careful staging, and traffic control measures. Despite the challenges, our crews maintained good attitudes, and a strong focus on safety while working long hours to meet project demands. Full roadway restoration followed each phase, including excavation, backfill, stormwater treatment elements, and new pavement.

Our team did a great job completing this tough project, delivering high-quality results, all while maintaining excellent communication with the City and surrounding community throughout the process. Great job guys.

This project involved replacing a failing rock retaining wall with a 60-foot-long drilled shaft soldier pile wall with wood lagging. We installed five W12x40 piles and three W14x68 piles, with all holes drilled using a TD25 TC Techno Drill and a 24-inch auger.
The project presented significant challenges due to the tight site conditions and proximity to an electrical vault. Despite these constraints, all work was completed in-house. The original wall was carefully and systematically removed as the new wall was constructed, minimizing the risk of sloughing.
Once the structural elements were in place, the wall was backfilled and compacted to ensure long-term stability. Drainage features were incorporated to prevent water buildup behind the wall, reducing future maintenance needs. The finished structure not only enhances the site's stability but also improves its overall functionality and appearance. Once again hats off to the crew for adding another great project to our resume.
