"As human beings, we have the desperate need, the deep-seated need to feel like we belong to something bigger than ourselves, to be contributors to something bigger.

"And that's more about culture. That's more, so, I mean, one of my favorite leaders, a gentleman by the name of Bob Chapman who ran a manufacturing company in the Midwest called Barry-Wehmiller. I mean, it's blue-collar manufacturing work.

"And yet, when you visit their factories, you see people who wake up every day with this amazing sense of purpose because they recognize that their job is not just to make machines. Their job is to serve the person to the left and serve the person to the right. And they feel each other there to support each other."

Many years ago, Simon Sinek befriended our late leader Bob Chapman and visited a Barry-Wehmiller company. Inspired by what he saw, Simon described it as “Truly Human,”which inspired the name of Bob's blog and gave our model a name, Truly Human Leadership.

Simon said of that visit: “I have this notion that we can live in a world where people go home at the end of the day fulfilled by their work… For the first time I have seen a company where this world exists. That is this company.”

He also pledged to carry the torch Bob had passed long after his time.

"I wouldn’t say that there was this vast difference in how we saw the culture and how we how we believed in the culture. But whenever you put it in black and white, you kind of hang onto every word and every sentence. Getting aligned around very specific traits of our culture, it was really eye opening to see that. It's very natural, depending on what part of the business you're in, to view the culture a little bit differently.

"A frontline person viewed it differently than someone in the corporate office. Those are natural based on their interactions and their work environment. To get everyone to get on the same page and understand those specific aspects of the Yellow Bike philosophy, that was a really, really cool experience."

Chapman & Co. Leadership Institute has had the privilege to partner with Ergon Inc. to help articulate the culture that has fueled the company’s success for more than 70 years. Together, they captured the beliefs, values, and leadership principles at the heart of the Ergon organization and translated them into what they called the Yellow Bike Philosophy — a shared cultural North Star designed to guide how Ergon leads, makes decisions, serves customers and grows for generations to come.
