Did you know?

· Electrical current is the flow of electrons in a conductor. In conductors, they cause heating. Electric currents create magnetic fields used in motors, generators, inductors, and transformers. Time-varying currents emit electromagnetic waves used in telecommunications to broadcast information.

• Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity with his famous kite experiment in 1752. During a thunderstorm, he flew a kite with a metal key attached to the string, proving that static electricity and lightning were the same. He also postulated that electricity had positive and negative elements and flowed between them.

• Michael Faraday is known as the 'Father of Electricity.' He made the first electric motor in 1821. Alessandro Volta, in 1800, made the first battery.

• Thomas Edison worked with DC currents. His discoveries included the first electric DC power plant in New York City in 1882.

• Nikola Tesla, in 1893, demonstrated the use of large-scale AC. The main advantage of AC over DC is that AC voltages are easily transformed to higher or lower voltages. High voltages are critical for low transmission losses.

• AC is transmitted at very high kilo-volts. Finally, at the point of use, it is stepped down to a safer low voltage, typically 110V, 240V, 480V, 600V, or 690V.

• When used instead of fossil-fuel heaters, electric heaters eliminate GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions with rapid payback periods because of the increased efficiency and life. Even in cases where there is an energy payment penalty (higher electric costs), the improved energy efficiency has a decisive financial advantage.

Trivia!

Did you know about the social cost of CO2 emissions? There are numerous ways to calculate this cost.

One way is to use an asset cost for the emissions. For example, the social cost in project assessments could be $283 per ton of CO2 emitted.

One can prevent emissions by converting to electrical heaters. The amount mitigated is (4.17-6.99) × 10-4 metric tons of CO2/kWh (source). One kg of nitrous oxides and 1 kg of methane emissions are equivalent to 298 kg and 25 kg, respectively, of CO2 emissions.

When used instead of fossil-fuel heaters, electric heaters eliminate GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions with rapid payback periods because of the increased efficiency and life. Even in cases where there is an energy payment penalty (higher electric costs), the improved energy efficiency has a decisive financial advantage.

Trivia!

Did you know energy costs for people have generally been rising about 8% due to climate warming, primarily because higher temperatures increase demand for air conditioning, resulting in higher electricity bills, especially during extreme heat waves?

Climate heating also changes animal behavior. New research finds that giraffes prefer flat terrain and do not easily traverse slopes of more than twenty degrees. However, because of climate change, animals have to migrate to higher regions and further north to find food and livable conditions.

Now, climate change (warming) is shrinking the size of animals. Scientists think it's because animals are rapidly adapting to the changing climate. Bergmann's rule proposed in 1847 suggests that in mammals and birds in cold climates, large body mass increases the volume-to-surface area ratio and provides maximum metabolic heat retention. Conversely, a smaller body mass increases surface area relative to volume in warmer temperatures, allowing for more heat loss ability.

Rising temperatures risk destabilizing the balance between wildlife and their ecosystem. As plants adapt to changing warming patterns, usually by blooming earlier, the wildlife that has adapted to them will face new environmental challenges.
Wood thrushes (Hylocichla mustelina), the official bird of Washington DC, fly north from the tropical forests of Central America every summer to their breeding grounds, along Florida to Maine. They need dependable ripe fruit and insect populations to fuel their journey, which are disappearing as the climate warms.

Birds fly in patterns often to retain heat. Such patterns are also naturally optimized for orderly flight with a lead-bird. It remains to be seen how these patterns change with rising temperatures from climate change.

When used instead of fossil-fuel heaters, electric heaters eliminate GHG (greenhouse gas emissions) emissions with rapid payback periods because of the increased efficiency and life. Even in cases where there is an energy payment penalty, the improved energy efficiency has a decisive financial advantage.

Thanksgiving Trivia!

Did you know that wave energy has the highest energy density of renewable energy sources?

Like other renewable energy sources, wave technologies are undergoing development. Multiple different technologies are used for wave energy. Five recognized types of technology are used, including Absorbers, Attenuators, Oscillation Water Columns, Overtopping, and Inverted Pendulum devices. Absorbers extract energy from the rise and fall of the waves with a blundered way of capturing wave energy.

Wave power is a form of renewable energy that generates electricity by harnessing the up-and-down motion of ocean waves. It is typically produced by floating turbine platforms or buoys that rise and fall with the swells. Wave energy converters transform a moving ocean wave's kinetic and potential energy into useful mechanical or electrical energy.

Waves can also be channeled into a narrow channel to increase their size and power, and turbines can be spun to generate electricity.

Renewable energy is clean energy derived from a source that is not depleted when used, such as wind, wave, geothermal heat, or solar power. Its environmental benefits include mitigating climate change by reducing air pollution compared to fossil fuels.
When used instead of fossil-fuel heaters, electric heaters eliminate GHG production while receiving rapid paybacks because of the increased efficiency and life. Even in cases where there is an energy payment penalty, the improved energy efficiency has a decisive financial advantage.

Did you know that we exist in several spheres?

The Ecosphere of Earth has four primary spheres: the atmosphere (gases surrounding the planet), hydrosphere (water on Earth), lithosphere (solid landmass), and biosphere (all living organisms). The Sun's primary "sphere" visible from Earth is called the photosphere, the Sun's visible surface-emitting light. The atmosphere has several identifiable spheres, like the troposphere and stratosphere. Inside the Earth are several distinct spheres in the crust, mantle, and core.

The Earth's Ecosphere lies within the heliosphere. We call the distance from Earth to the Sun an astronomical unit (AU). The diameter of the Sun's heliosphere is estimated to be around 200 astronomical units (AU).

The heliosphere is considered part of the Sun's magnetosphere. Outside the Sun's heliosphere is interstellar space, specifically the region known as the "local interstellar medium," which is filled with plasma and particles from other stars.

Inside the heliosphere are all the planets of our solar system, including Earth, the asteroid belt, and the Kuiper Belt. The heliosphere acts like a protective bubble from most cosmic radiation outside the solar system.

Climate change from fossil fuel emissions mainly occurs in the inner parts of the Earth's atmosphere, called the troposphere. However, new science has begun identifying some climate change influences beyond the troposphere.

When used instead of fossil-fuel heaters, electric heaters eliminate GHG production while receiving rapid paybacks because of the increased efficiency and life. Even in cases where there is an energy payment penalty, the improved energy efficiency has a decisive financial advantage.

Did you know?

The Earth’s atmosphere is bombarded by energy charged particles (primary cosmic rays) from outer space originating from the Sun.

When these particles encounter Earth’s atmosphere, they trigger high-energy secondary radiation (secondary cosmic rays).

Fortunately, only some of this radiation reaches the Earth’s surface.
The Earth’s magnetic field shields the Earth from the cosmic rays.

The Equator is shielded more than the Poles by the magnetic field.

This magnetic field can reverse (not expected to in our lifetimes), but the efficacy of shielding is diminished when it reverses. That’s when the cosmic rays can significantly affect life.

Although not well established, variations in the flux of cosmic rays into Earth’s atmosphere have been hypothesized to influence the terrestrial climate by affecting the atmospheric water condensation and the formation of clouds.

Tropical thunderclouds over ocean and coastal regions commonly emit gamma rays and even show highly energetic gamma-ray bursts over large regions. Gamma rays are very energetic X-rays. Thunderclouds are increasing with climate warming.

Did you know?

• Did you know that nighttime global average temperatures are warming faster than the daytime global average temperatures because of increased greenhouse gases that trap heat at night?
• The present average tropospheric heating rate (same as the atmospheric and the Earth's surface) is about 0.2 Celsius per decade.
• Climate change is no longer in slow motion. The temperature swings, severe heat, severe storms, and drought are exacting a real toll.
• The total asset loss cost per ton of globally emitted CO2 can range from $40-$300 per ton of CO2 emitted.
• The record monthly temperatures are increasing the likelihood of 2024 becoming the hottest year since the industrial period began. Even more of concern is that it is one of the most humid years, leading to a very stormy, high entropy generation rate in the troposphere.
• One of the best ways to plan industrial change-over to electrified heating and eliminate fossil fuel heating is by choosing devices rated for a higher temperature output.

Did you know the spacecrafts Voyager 1 and 2 have ventured far into deep space and are still sending back valuable information?

Voyager 1 is currently the most distant human-made object from Earth. It reached interstellar space in August 2012 and crossed the heliosphere, where the Sun exerts only limited influence on objects.

The primary mission of Voyager 2 was the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn. After making valuable discoveries there, such as active volcanoes on Jupiter's moon Io and granular information about the rings of Saturn, the spacecraft explored Uranus and Neptune. Now it is exploring deep space.

Voyager 1 has a speed of 17km/s. Voyager 2 has a speed of 15km/s. The Voyager spacecraft are very slowly deaccelerating as they travel farther from the center of the solar system.
The Voyager spacecraft can help scientists understand the heliosphere, which shields the Earth from radiation and energetic particles. Such understanding can help scientists find solutions to climate change. For example, the Voyager 2 spacecraft has detected radio emissions from the outer heliosphere. These emissions are believed to be caused by interactions between plasma disturbances and strong shocks from solar activity and the heliopause.

Trivia!

Climate change is causing sea levels to rise at uneven rates across the globe.

The rough estimates are that the global sea level are currently rising at an average rate of 4mm (~0.15")/year - expected to accelerate.

Sea levels are expected to rise by 8”-14” by 2050 along the East coast. Across much of the world's oceans, waves are also getting bigger.

One of the highest rates is expected along the Gulf coast. Sea levels are expected to rise by 14”-18” by 2050 along the Gulf coast.
The lowest rise is expected along the West coast particularly along the Northwest Pacific regions because of tectonic plate movements.

The countries that are expected to be affected the most by sea level rise include Netherlands and India. Several oceanic islands are expected to be underwater by 2025 or even earlier.

The rise in sea levels is related to fossil fuel burning. The NASA Sea Level Projection Tool allows users to visualize and download sea level projection data.

Did you know that the quantum world and climate change are related?

Quantum mechanics is a branch of physics that studies how matter and light behave at the atomic and subatomic levels. It explains how objects can have the characteristics of particles and waves simultaneously. Quantum systems have quantized energy, momentum, and other quantities, which means they only have discrete values.

Quantum mechanics evolved in the mid-1920s - developed by Max Planck, Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Erwin Schrödinger, Werner Heisenberg, Satyendra Nath Bose, Max Born, Paul Dirac, and others.

Carbon dioxide's powerful heat-trapping effect is related to its quantum structure. Quantum mechanics shows that CO2 molecules vibrate in a certain way, trapping far more of Earth's infrared radiation than expected - first utilized in a device called the Cascade E-Ion.

Quantum computers can run simulations of climate change mitigation and predict scenarios faster and more accurately than other methods. Quantum computing could contribute to solutions that change how we generate and store power, build houses, cars, ships, and airplanes, explain the weather, optimize power transportation, and even design long-standing industrial processes such as cement, steel, and fertilizer manufacturing with zero GHG emissions.

Trivia!

Birds in the Northern Hemisphere tend to migrate northward in the spring to take advantage of insect populations and budding plants. During winter, the birds move south again.

Climate change affects bird migration and increasingly, the food sources for birds. Increasing temperatures are impacting local bird species and concentrations.

Thermoregulation in a bird impacts the flock's flight pattern formation. Flight patterns (like the V formation) are related to energy efficiency and impact the distances that birds can fly—some small birds can no longer return to Spain, France, or North Africa in winter.

Climate change could be forcing birds to alter their energy use. Some birds have become less vocal. Other birds have become smaller and are seemingly increasing their wing spans.

Afro-Siberian red knots migrate from the Arctic to winter in Africa, where they recover from the arduous journey. But warming in Siberia is causing physical changes in the birds that hinder their ability to feed, and scientists fear the subspecies is headed for extinction.
