· Electrical current is the flow of electrons in a conductor. In conductors, they cause heating. Electric currents create magnetic fields used in motors, generators, inductors, and transformers. Time-varying currents emit electromagnetic waves used in telecommunications to broadcast information.
• Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity with his famous kite experiment in 1752. During a thunderstorm, he flew a kite with a metal key attached to the string, proving that static electricity and lightning were the same. He also postulated that electricity had positive and negative elements and flowed between them.
• Michael Faraday is known as the 'Father of Electricity.' He made the first electric motor in 1821. Alessandro Volta, in 1800, made the first battery.
• Thomas Edison worked with DC currents. His discoveries included the first electric DC power plant in New York City in 1882.
• Nikola Tesla, in 1893, demonstrated the use of large-scale AC. The main advantage of AC over DC is that AC voltages are easily transformed to higher or lower voltages. High voltages are critical for low transmission losses.
• AC is transmitted at very high kilo-volts. Finally, at the point of use, it is stepped down to a safer low voltage, typically 110V, 240V, 480V, 600V, or 690V.
• When used instead of fossil-fuel heaters, electric heaters eliminate GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions with rapid payback periods because of the increased efficiency and life. Even in cases where there is an energy payment penalty (higher electric costs), the improved energy efficiency has a decisive financial advantage.
