She didn't want anyone telling her she couldn't fix it herself. πŸ’›πŸ› οΈ

Jailynne McKenzie joined the Building Value Construction Training Program because she wanted the independence that comes with skilled trades. She left with the skills to prove it: forklift certified, skid steer operator, trained in deconstruction of fixtures, plumbing, and HVAC systems.

But the moment that stuck with her most? Her observation that a diverse group of construction workers all wore the same neon yellow shirt. Different companies. Different trades. Different backgrounds. Same commitment to the craft.

Watch Jailynne's story below and see why the neon yellow crew keeps growing.

We've got salvaged granite and marble countertops in stock at Building Value--and at $15/sq ft, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better deal in Cincinnati. Full slabs generally run $750 to $950. Because these are reclaimed materials, each piece has its own character, so inspect before you commit!

Got questions? Just press the button at the front register. It plays the Under the Sea tune from "The Little Mermaid" and a retail associate will be right with you. 🐠

Your house has secrets. Time to learn them. 🏠

Join us TOMORROW, May 30th from 10am–1pm at Building Value for Houses 101 with Rhett, hosted by Do It Yourself Darlin!

Whether you're a first-time homeowner, thinking about buying, or just tired of not knowing what that sound is, this lecture-style workshop breaks down everything that makes a house run: plumbing, electrical, roofing, HVAC, foundations, windows, and more. You'll leave knowing what to look for, what to fix, and when to call for help.

⚠️ Heads up: If your home was built before 1978, Do It Yourself Darlin also hosts lead safety classes twice a year--highly recommended before tackling any renovation work.

Big news, big promotion. πŸŽ‰

If you've visited our Northside store lately and noticed how incredible it looks β€” that's Terry Brueneman's handiwork. As our Retail Manager, Terry didn't just run the floor; he transformed the space. He repainted the exterior and interior of the building, remodeled the breezeway, constructed a second customer bathroom, and built two breakrooms for our trainees and crew supervisors.

The Building Value storefront you know and love? Terry renovated that.

We're thrilled to announce that Terry has stepped into his new role as Deconstruction Manager β€” bringing that same hands-on expertise and genuine care for craft to our deconstruction and cleanout services.

Terry, we couldn't be more excited to see what you build next. Congratulations! πŸ‘

Northside has always been shaped by people who believed places could change lives. Maureen Wood was one of them.

When Maureen passed away in May 2017, Cincinnati lost one of its most prolific and visionary social activists. But the mark she left on this neighborhood β€” and on this city β€” is impossible to overstate.

While managing the Crazy Ladies Bookstore, Wood converted two abandoned public schools into apartments, turned a derelict factory into a bustling community center, and cofounded a collective that taught home-repair skills to more than 2,000 women. She believed, deeply, that generating community around a person's home was as important as the roof itself.

The values Maureen championed β€” preservation over demolition, community over profit, dignity in every space β€” feel very close to home for those of us working right here in Northside. We're honored to be neighbors to her legacy.

πŸ•ŠοΈ Maureen Wood. May her work live on.

It's a curved wooden formwork mold! The kind once used to shape wet concrete into arches, bridges, and curved architectural structures. Once the concrete sets, the mold comes out, and what's left is something built to last generations.

This piece of construction history is available in our Northside store, and it's just one example of the unexpected treasures waiting in our architectural salvage collection. Reclaimed wood, vintage hardware, ornate trim, and one-of-a-kind finds that you won't stumble across anywhere else.

Come see it in person at 4040 Spring Grove Ave. πŸ“

Today we remember.

As a social enterprise powered by Easterseals Redwood, we're proud to be part of an organization that shows up every day for veterans in our community β€” offering the support, resources, and dignity they deserve.

Today we honor all who served, and hold close the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. From our Building Value family to yours, thank you.

This is what a clean slate looks like. ✨

Before: tile scraped from the floors, walls stripped bare, our crew doing the heavy lifting to clear the way. After: a completely reimagined Mitchell's Salon & Day Spa with warm wood finishes, new flooring, a stunning reception area, and salon stations built to impress.

We didn't just haul debris. We deconstructed with purpose--salvaging materials, reducing waste, and handing the space back ready to become something beautiful.
