Sometimes restoration means making the part.

Sometimes it means making the tool to fix the part.

The original BMW VIN plate had lost a few of its stamped numbers, so I made a simple fixture to keep the number stamps aligned and put them back where they belong.

Nothing fancy. A little 3D printing, some number stamps, a hammer and a problem that needed solving.

Just another day at Boxer Metal.

Sometimes the little projects make the biggest difference.

The backup camera on my Prius came with an adjustable mount that never stayed where I wanted it, and the wiring was actually being pinched by the rear hatch release.

So I designed a new mount from scratch.

• Printed in ASA-CF
• Fixed 12° downward angle
• Cleaner wiring
• More solid than the original adjustable bracket

A small project, but one that solves a couple of problems and should last for years.

That's one of the things I enjoy most—designing practical solutions instead of simply adapting what's already available.

Design. Build. Ride. Repeat.

BOXER METAL WEDNESDAY

Back in the shop.

Today's projects didn't have much in common... at least on the surface.

🏍️ Making progress on a BMW Airhead.

🖨️ Printing custom hardware for the Prius.

🥵 Finding ways to survive another triple-digit day in the shop.

🌕 And ending the evening with a moon that made me stop for a minute.

Every day at Boxer Metal is different.

Some days I'm machining steel.
Some days I'm designing parts that have never existed.
Some days I'm rebuilding motorcycles.
Some days I'm solving problems with a 3D printer.

That's what keeps it interesting.

Last week I shared a thought that has guided me for years:

Build from the heart, not for fame.

Today was another reminder that the work isn't about one project...

It's about showing up, solving problems, learning something new, and enjoying the process.

See you next Wednesday.

This is where ideas become prototypes, prototypes become parts, and old motorcycles get a second chance.

It's a machine shop, fabrication shop, design studio, and lately, a 3D Design Lab—all under one roof.

Over the past few weeks I've been updating the Boxer Metal website to better tell that story, and today I'm sharing my first shop video.

Take a quick walk through the shop and let me know...

If you stopped by Boxer Metal, what would you head toward first?

Boxer Metal has never been just about building motorcycles.

It's a workshop...

A design studio...

A place where old BMWs, vintage Volkswagens, 3D-printed parts, and new ideas all come together.

Over the past few weeks I've been making a lot of updates—not only in the shop, but behind the scenes on the Boxer Metal website as well. New pages, new projects, and a better look at what we're building.

Every corner of this place has a story, and I'm looking forward to sharing more of them.

If you haven't stopped by the website lately, take a look.

If you could spend one afternoon at Boxer Metal, what would you want to see first?

My pickup truck gets 45 mpg... and only has three wheels.

This old 1986 BMW K75 sidecar has become my pickup truck around Boxer Metal.

It hauls parts, tools, coffee, family, and friends... and occasionally reminds me why I love it so much. With its funky '80s styling and unmistakable engine sound, it never fails to make me smile.

Some vehicles are built to get you from Point A to Point B.

Others become part of your story.

If you could keep just one BMW forever, what would it be?

The newest member of the Boxer Metal crew officially clocked in today. 🐾

Meet Rex.

He spent his first day inspecting the shop, checking out Knarf, claiming the BMW sidecar as his own, and finding the perfect spot next to the South Bend lathe.

Tonight is a little different.

Sunny C., Rex, and I are spending the night in the shop, working on Knarf and sleeping in the van. Just good company, a few projects, and another step toward getting Knarf back on the road.

I’d say Rex fits in just fine.

Welcome to Boxer Metal, buddy.

🐾❤️

Question:
What vehicle in the shop would your dog claim first?

My personal Adventure Bike / Scrambler project is slowly coming together.

Today's project was prototyping the instrument panel and dashboard. Still working through different layouts, but I'm liking the direction so far.

Which would you choose: the stock R60/7 tank or the smaller /6 tank?

1978 BMW R60/7

What started life as a humble airhead has evolved into something entirely different.

This personal Boxer Metal project is being transformed into a lightweight off-road adventure machine built for exploring the roads less traveled.

Should I build it as a scrambler or full adventure bike? Please comment below.
