Launched in 2023 and supported by the American Rescue Plan Act, Cook County Sun and Save set out to expand access to renewable energy for income-eligible Cook County homeowners by providing no-cost solar panel installations.

Various public and private partners including 360 Energy Group, Cook County Department of Environment and Sustainability, and EnergySense Resilience Center came together around this program to help residents save on energy costs and reduce carbon emissions. As of now, Cook County Sun and Save has installed 62 Solar Projects across the Chicagoland area, with many more in progress.

As the program advances toward its goal, Sun and Save continues to slash utility bills and make renewable energy accessible to homeowners throughout the county.

The annual Clean Jobs Midwest Report has ranked Illinois fifth in the nation for clean energy job creation, adding 3,724 jobs last year. One out of every ten new jobs in Illinois in 2024 were in the clean energy industry according to the report, placing Illinois as the frontrunner among Midwestern states for job growth in solar, wind, batteries, energy efficiency, storage and grid, and other clean energy subsectors. These fields continued to outpace the broader economy, and have the heaviest presence in Cook County, with more than 56,000 clean energy workers.

ComEd and Nicor Gas are collaborating to provide advanced energy efficiency certifications to recent graduates of their Market Development Initiative (MDI). This program offers training and certifications to help new and experienced professionals, with a focus on students from diverse and local backgrounds, succeed in the energy efficiency industry. Recent MDI graduates are now eligible to earn Building Performance Institute (BPI) certifications, allowing them to perform energy modeling, building analysis, and data evaluation to make high-impact efficiency recommendations. According to Kelly Lena, director of energy efficiency services at Nicor Gas:

“Our goal is to equip MDI graduates with the necessary skills to succeed in this growing industry. The additional training will enhance their ability to make a significant impact in the industry while delivering essential weatherization services to the communities that need them the most."
