Earlier this year CBS (WBBM in Chicago) ran a story about the redevelopment of Cabrini Green into the North Town Village section of this project. As the Architect for this project, we would like to share this enormous undertaking with you.

In 1999 Main Architecture (known then as Bauhs Dring Seglin Main) was hired by Peter Holsten of Holsten Real Estate development Corporation and Hal Lichterman of Kenard Realty to provide the architectural services for the development of the new North Town Village here in Chicago. The City of Chicago had developed the Near North Redevelopment Initiative (NNRI) to replace the crime-ridden and unsafe Cabrini Green buildings and invited developers and realtors to answer a Request for Qualifications to determine the best way to move forward with this groundbreaking initiative. Holsten Real Estate and Kenard Realty were chosen to develop the North Town Village section of this project and Bauhs Dring Seglin Main was privileged to be chosen as the Architect for this project. ARCHITECTURE AND DAYCARE

As architects, Main Architecture considers the impact children’s surroundings have on their development and wellbeing of prime importance to giving them the background to for a happy and successful life. While it is up to the experts to design the curriculum and the overall program, it is the architect’s job to help them realize their vision. The architect should be expert in what it takes to make a structure stand, how to meet building codes and how to translate the program needs into a physical design. A well planned physical environment will support the implementation of a high quality program for young children.

Main Architecture has worked with Owners developing four Little Green Tree House facilities in Chicago and building out several New York Kids Club facilities in New York City and in Chicago. We have become very familiar – dare we say, expert – in the design, codes, and permitting required for daycare facilities – and we love doing it.

Chicago has just voted to update its building code. It is planned that this update will allow for more flexible building systems and will save both time and money for architects and any one building in the City.
