What is a ton? In the scrap world this is the question that comes up the most along with what ton is your price based on. Well let me help educate you on this.

There are 3 types of ton.

First there is a "Gross Ton". In pounds a gross ton is 2,240 pounds to equal 1 ton. This ton is commonly used in the scrap world.

Second is a "Metric Ton". To get 1 Metric Ton you would need 2,204 pounds. This ton is typically a European unit of measure.

Finally there is the "Net Ton". This is the good ole 2,000 pounds equals 1 ton. It is very common here in America and is also used regularly in the scrap world.

How does this effect you as a scrap seller? Your price per pound changes up and down based on the type of ton you are selling at.

Clark's buys by the Net Ton in all of its yards. Hope this helps you in future with all your scrap decisions.

Good morning all.

Here is a scrap tip for the day. When you bring in mixed scrap metal, whether it is a box of mixed copper, brass or mixed iron it will always be graded at the lowest grade in the mix.

Why is that you ask? Because it costs money to clean materials to get them to a recyclable grade. This is why scrap buyers pay more for your clean product. Either way someone is getting paid to clean that material.
