The Big Girls are coming out to play. We had a couple more over 6 pounds and 3-5 pounders as well. Fog delay slowed us down early but we made up for it. That’s how trophy season starts.

Half-day afternoons during Trophy Season fish WELL — the warming trend by 1 PM gets the fish active, and you’re off the water by sunset.

✅ Never Give Up in Tough Conditions ✅

The Conditions: Blue bird skies, slick calm, lake turnover (murky water) We still ended up with several really nice fish.

I could tell right away these fish were not wanting to eat. They were staying way behind the bait and acting extremely lazy.

When things are not working I try a couple of approaches. With artificial I really lean into reaction bites. You may need a more subtle bait such as a downsized jerkbait, fluke, 17-20mm coike, smaller glide bait. I look for something I can keep right in front of a fish and give them time to close the distance so a really slow fall or suspension is key. Once they have closed I get progressively more aggressive until I get them eat. Alternatively I may just dead stick on these fish if I can get them to follow a bait to the bottom.

With live bait I have had some really good success igniting small groups of fish by catching tons of bait and thoroughly chumming the area I am fishing to create an artificial feeding frenzy.

The key is to keep moving and getting around new fish until you can get something going. If the fish don't cooperate DON'T GIVE UP! Turn the trip into a scouting mission. Check on upcoming patterns, scout for new offshore brush, check grass lines, etc. These efforts may pay off BIG TIME down the road.

HOT TIP: When the wheels come off try a different ecosystem. Marinas, freshwater springs, large man made structures, etc. this can be key in water levels, conditions, and/or current are outside the norms.

Incredible day shooting with Bill Dance Giant Bass Open with the man himself Bill Dance. Bill has been a hero of mine since I was 5 years old! Yesterday I got to shake hands and catch a bass out of one of his lakes. I am beyond grateful for such an awesome opportunity. Water temps are finally getting right. The grass bite — froggin’ and punchin’ — is about to go wild, and the trophy live bait bite right behind it. These next 3-4 weeks are the window where you get both: numbers that don’t quit AND real giants on the deck.
