Join our friends at the Wayne Theatre in Waynesboro for an upcoming presentation as part of their Science Talks series - the final Science Talk of the 2025-26 Season - Tuesday April 21st.

"Forest Forensics: Finding Clues to the Past in Our Woods Today", presented by Chris Bolgiano, JMU Professor Emerita. Chris describes herself as a "mildly amusing nature writer" who loves "to illustrate and explain the clues to forest history still visible in the woods today. It's a sad history, but it resulted in nearly 2 million acres of national forest in western VA. Today those acres offer our best hope not just for recreation, biodiversity, and clean water and air, but also for mitigation of the worst impacts of climate change."

The presentation will be livestreamed at 7 PM from the Wayne Theatre and Virginia Museum of Natural History pages and then posted as a video on those sites.

Together with videographer David Verde, the South River Watershed Coalition (SRWC) have produced a short film to teach the science of watersheds through storytelling. Inspired by a 1960s film called “Paddle To The Sea”, the story uses Chessie, a character we follow on an adventure from the headwaters of South River over 300 miles to the ocean. Along the way, Chessie encounters landscapes, wildlife, and communities connected by rivers and their history.

Together with premiering their 20-minute short film, videographer David Verde and SRWC president Tom Benzing will explain the production process. In addition, the SRWC has secured the rights from the National Film Board of Canada to show “Paddle To The Sea”, the inspiration for this production. As an added incentive to attend in person, the first 50 people to arrive will receive a small "Chessie" duckie!

This event is part of the Science Talk series hosted by the Historic Wayne Theatre in Waynesboro. If you are unable to attend, the event will be livestreamed on both the Wayne Theatre & Virginia Museum of Natural History pages. https://www.facebook.com/VirginiaMuseum/

The Virginia Bird Atlas website went live today!

Ecosystem Services’ Mitigation Banking Specialist Lisa Koerner Perry has been involved in this project for over 9 years - first as a Regional Coordinator for the data collection phase and then as a member of the Final Products Committee, which was tasked with publication of the data. The project is a collaboration between the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, the Virginia Society of Ornithology, and the Conservation Management Institute at Virginia Tech, with hundreds of volunteers and other partner groups (1500+).

The Atlas is a comprehensive source for targeted Conservation efforts for species of need, as well as an accounting of breeding species in Virginia – including species not previously detected in earlier efforts. We invite you to check it out!

Virginia’s Second Breeding Bird Atlas provides citizens and conservation professionals with valuable data on the distribution of breeding birds across Virginia.

Big milestone in Harrisonburg! Construction just finished on the Linville Creek stream restoration with historic floodplain reconnection, building on the work this dedicated landowner started in Phase 1.

We took care to protect the big existing trees and add woody debris for structure and habitat. Planting with native species from the region is scheduled for later this fall

Construction partners: North State Environmental, Inc.
