Day 5: Come in Clutch – Relief Pitching for First Responders 🚨

First responders, tow truck drivers, construction crews, and maintenance workers put their lives on the line every day—especially on rural roads.
In 2024 alone, 46 emergency responders were killed by vehicles while doing their jobs. And 94 workers lost their lives at road construction sites. These tragedies are preventable.

Let’s all come in clutch and help save lives.
When you see flashing lights or workers on the roadside: Move Over. Slow Down.

What Can You Do?

👷 Practitioners
Offer TIM (Traffic Incident Management) training
Require reflective gear
Deploy digital alert systems
Post roadside awareness messages
Join “Move Over” campaigns
Participate in Crash Responder Safety Week (Nov 15–21)

🚗 Public
Follow Move Over laws
Watch Responder Safety videos
Take the pledge
Learn how to protect roadside workers

Let’s work together to make rural roads safer—for everyone.

Day 4: Change the Game — Extra Innings With Whole Blood
This Rural Road Safety Awareness Week, we’re highlighting a powerful life-saving strategy: prehospital whole blood transfusion at the scene of a crash.

In 2022, over 42,000 people died in traffic crashes — but 42% were still alive when first responders arrived.
That means timely care could have made the difference.

Prehospital whole blood programs are being called “the most impactful initiative since the seatbelt.” They give trauma patients a fighting chance — right where it counts most: at the point of injury.

💡 How You Can Help:
Practitioners
• Explore starting a local whole blood transfusion program
• Engage stakeholders in your community
• Host a blood drive

Public
• Donate blood — one donation can save lives
• Host a community blood drive
• Support your local EMS teams

Day 3 of Rural Road Safety Awareness Week: Be a Pinch Hitter! 🚨
Stop the Bleed. Save Lives.

Every minute counts. The average bleed-out time is 3–5 minutes, while first responders may take 7–10 minutes to arrive, or even longer in rural areas.

You could be the difference between life and death.

Stop the Bleed is a national program that empowers everyday people to step up during emergencies and stop severe bleeding before help arrives. It’s officially backed by the U.S. Department of Defense and led by the American College of Surgeons.

Transportation professionals: Let’s double down. Train field staff in Stop the Bleed and CPR. Stock your vehicles with Stop the Bleed kits. Prepare to act when every second matters.

Public: Get trained. Carry a kit. Know what to do if you're first on the scene.
Because “the only thing more tragic than a death is a death that could have been prevented.”

Day 2 of is here – Let’s Assemble Your Dream Team!
🧑‍🚒👮‍♀️👷‍♂️🚑 The Post-Crash Lineup Starts With YOU.

When it comes to post-crash care, first responders and trauma centers aren’t the only heroes.

You are part of the team, too!

From bystanders and dispatchers to DOT staff, media, policymakers, and even the general public — saving lives after a crash is a shared responsibility.

Today’s focus: Building a high-performing post-crash care team that acts fast, collaborates, and protects every life on rural roads.

The Dream Team Includes:
• Bystanders who call 911 and stop the bleed
• EMS and fire departments who respond with speed
• DOT and county crews who improve safety infrastructure
• Trauma centers, liaisons, towing companies, victim advocates, elected officials—and more!

Let’s build the team that keeps rural communities safer.

Today is Day 1 of Rural Road Safety Awareness Week (RRSAW2025)!

We’re kicking things off with a grand slam focus: Post-Crash Care on Rural Roads

Every second counts after a crash — especially in rural and Tribal areas where long distances, limited EMS resources, and poor infrastructure can delay life-saving care.

In 2022, EMS was dispatched to 1.5 million crashes, and 42% of those who died were alive when help arrived. A delay of just one minute increases the risk of death by 3%.

That’s why post-crash care is a vital part of the Safe System Approach — it’s the final layer of protection when crashes do happen.

What you can do today:

👷‍♂️ Practitioners:
• Add post-crash care strategies to your safety plans
• Use EMS + FARS data for rural planning
• Provide rural-specific training & tech like NextGen 911

🚗 Public:
• Thank a first responder
• Support your local EMS
• Practice safe driving habits

Download the full toolkit and access webinars, reports, and resources to help strengthen post-crash care in your community:https://ruralsafetycenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/RRSAW25-Baseball-Cards-Printer.pdf

Let’s work together to improve rural response and save more lives.
