A lot of what keeps us busy at MachineTech happens long after a machine has been delivered and installed.

TOUCHDOWN 🏈

Another Hurco has landed at this shop in North Carolina...the second, actually. When you know you have a good thing going, why not keep it going?

There's something to be said for a customer coming back for another machine. They've already spent time with the control, put the equipment to work, and know what to expect.

Now they're adding more Hurco capacity to the floor, and we're glad to be part of that growth.

The spindle doesn’t have to cut faster to make more parts. Sometimes it just needs to spend less time sitting still.

That's where an automatic pallet changer comes in. While the machine is cutting on one pallet, the next pallet can be loaded and prepared outside the work envelope. When machining is complete, the pallets exchange and the next cycle can get underway.

That basic idea can be applied in a lot of different ways, from a two-pallet HMC to larger pallet systems designed to keep machines supplied with work for extended or even unattended production.

The real advantage isn't simply automation for automation's sake. It's separating setup time from spindle time. Because a faster cycle only gets you so far if the machine spends too much of the day waiting for the next one.

There’s no expiration date stamped on the side of a CNC machine.

We’ve seen older machines that still earn their floor space every single day. We’ve also seen much newer machines that are costing a shop more than anyone realizes.

Age alone usually isn’t the deciding factor.

Start paying attention to things like increasing downtime, harder-to-find parts, declining accuracy, slower cycle times, maintenance costs, and whether the machine is keeping you from taking on work you actually want.

Sometimes keeping an older machine running makes perfect sense. Sometimes the expensive decision is continuing to keep it running.

Your machine can’t make parts if the spindle isn’t turning.

That sounds obvious, but when shops start looking for more capacity, the first instinct is often to look for a faster machine.

Sometimes the better question is: Where is the machine you already have losing time?

Loading and unloading.
Multiple setups.
Probing parts manually.
Waiting on inspection.
Tool changes.
Programming at the machine.
Clearing chips between cycles.

None of those things seem huge on their own. But add them up across every part, every shift, and every week, and you can find a surprising amount of capacity hiding in the process.

Before you ask, “How do we cut faster?”
