Senior Project Engineer Matt breaks down our new Spirit Chill Filtration Skid from the ADI show floor. Built to make chill filtration practical at craft scale, come see it at Booth 338!

Chill filtration is a technique used by distilleries to maintain clarity and consistency in lower proof whiskey and other spirits. The process requires chilling product to near freezing temperatures, then filtering out haze forming compounds that precipitate at colder temperatures. Because traditional chill filtration requires significant cooling utility, it was difficult for smaller craft producers to add to their proofing and bottling process.

The Deutsche Chill Filter Skid uses an economizing heat exchanger and a 3/4HP Ss Brewtech chiller that plugs into a standard 110V outlet to decrease the required size of the cooling utility. This skid can process up to 3 gallons per minute when operating at steady state.

From 11 neighborhood coffee shops to an expanding cold brew concentrate business and a wide-ranging lineup of freshly roasted coffees, has built one of New Jersey’s most distinctive coffee brands.

To support its growing production needs, our team engineered and manufactured a custom 1,000-gallon cold brewing vessel. Working from an existing tank design, we incorporated several improvements to better support Rook’s process.
The completed solution gives Rook the capacity to scale production while maintaining the craft quality of its coffee and cold brew products.

We are thankful to work with innovative producers like Rook and provide solution-driven equipment tailored to the products and processes that make them stand out.

How much lagering time could your brewery save with filtration?

We recently partnered with Thermo Fisher Scientific to evaluate several beer filtration media using a Kölsch brewed at our showroom brewery. By testing multiple filtration stages, we looked at how different configurations impacted clarity, body, and flavor.

One of the biggest takeaways: a 1.0 um filtration step removed yeast from the finished beer and reduced typical lagering time by more than 50% — helping breweries free up tank space while still producing a great finished product.
At our Brew Day event, attendees sampled the filtered beer firsthand, and several breweries began exploring filtration as a way to increase capacity and improve production efficiency.
