Talladega doesn’t sit still for long. It’s 2.66 miles, the cars run in big packs, and one lane change or a good run in the draft can shuffle the field in a few seconds. A driver can be mid-pack one lap, leading the next, then back in traffic just as quickly. This weekend, with the championship field on the line, every one of those swings matters.

And every lap, teams, officials, broadcasters, and fans are all looking at the same running order. It has to be right.

Unpredictable is normal there, and it’s normal for most businesses too. Plans change, priorities shift, and the systems behind the work have to keep up without someone patching things together by hand.

This weekend at COTA, Formula 1 shares the track with F1 Academy, Porsche Carrera Cup North America, and Masters Historic Racing. Same circuit, same weekend, and each series runs things its own way. One is running a reverse grid race, one is wrapping up its season, and one is racing F1 cars from the ’70s and ’80s.

We’ve spent years working with sanctioning bodies, and we keep seeing the same thing. When an organization gets pushed into a process built for someone else, the people running the event are the ones stuck with the workarounds.

Business isn’t much different. Two companies in the same line of work can run their day-to-day completely differently. Software built for “the industry” usually ends up fitting nobody very well.

Data doesn’t do much good if it’s stuck in one place. At a race weekend, the same results have to reach teams, officials, fans, and broadcast partners, and each of them needs it a little differently. We’ve spent years solving that problem trackside.

What’s become clear is that it’s not a racing problem. A construction company needs job data in front of project managers, accounting, and the client. An insurance services firm needs the same records flowing between employers, carriers, and their own staff. Usually the information exists. It’s just sitting in three systems that don’t talk to each other, and people are filling the gaps with spreadsheets and email.

When systems share information reliably, people stop working around their technology and start using it.

NASCAR’s three national series are at Phoenix Raceway this weekend, beginning with the Truck Series tonight. Sunday’s Cup race is the seventh of 10 in the Chase, and for the first time since 2019, Phoenix won’t host the championship.

Much of what makes a race weekend run can’t be seen from the grandstands. Before a car turns a lap, crew members, officials and media need credentials that give them access to the right areas across three days and multiple series. Once the racing starts, timing and scoring systems record every lap down to the millisecond. That data then has to reach officials, teams, broadcasters and gaming partners in real time, and each of them needs it in a different format.

When everything works, no one notices. That’s the standard motorsports technology has to meet every weekend.

Today, Charlotte Motor Speedway hosts the Bank of America 400 as the NASCAR Cup Series takes on the 1.5-mile oval. While the weather and the racing will get plenty of attention this weekend, the access control behind a major race like this is a significant operation, too.

Thousands of people move through the facility with very different levels of access. Teams, officials, media, vendors, guests and series personnel all need to get where they’re supposed to be, while restricted areas remain secure.

The NHRA Midwest Nationals roll into World Wide Technology Raceway this weekend, and tonight's qualifying has a new twist: the first-ever "Top Dog" competition.

The quickest qualifier in each professional class takes the "Top Dog Throne," but the position is never secure. Every run presents a chance to be displaced, and the driver still seated when qualifying concludes earns the title, complete with a hot dog trophy.

Here's what makes it work: when qualifying positions can change by a few thousandths of a second, accurate timing and real-time scoring aren't just nice to have, they're what make the competition credible for teams, officials, and fans.

Road Atlanta is a different kind of challenge. Petit Le Mans puts IMSA teams, officials, and technology through one of the most demanding weekends on the calendar - intense pace, diverse field, very little room for systems that can't adapt quickly.
