Six mounts. One quarter-acre. Romaine lettuce growing right under the panels.
GRID Alternatives SoCal designed and built a 24 kW array on six MT Solar pole mounts at Cal Poly Pomona's Spadra Farm, Southern California's first agrivoltaics research site focused on commercial crops. The project is led by Pitzer College's Robert Redford Conservancy with Cal Poly Pomona's Huntley College of Agriculture, and funded by a $1.8 million grant from the Foundation for Food and Agriculture Research.
Why pole mounts? Researchers needed to change the shade on purpose, so every array tilts. And students plant, irrigate, and harvest right beneath them, so each array sits on its own pole with about 8 feet of clearance at the low edge. No ducking, no rebuilding, and a small footprint on the soil.
The early read from Cal Poly Pomona's Eshwar Ravishankar: crops are doing just as well, if not better, under the panels, with less water and fertilizer.
Congrats to GRID Alternatives SoCal crew on the build!
