The future workforce has entered the chat... 🎓

Over the next several weeks, we're excited to welcome six interns to the 2026 SMC Intern Class!

From engineering, sales, and supply chain, to assembly and business operations, these students will be getting a hands-on look at the world of manufacturing while becoming part of the Solon team and culture along the way.

We believe we have a responsibility to coach, mentor and invest in the next generation of talent— helping young professionals build confidence, develop skills and gain meaningful real-world experience during their time with us. To support that growth, we've built a robust development program centered around teambuilding, networking, Lean and 5S training, business and technology skills, mentorship, community involvement, and hands-on learning experiences designed to foster both personal and professional growth.

Our employees find this experience incredibly meaningful and rewarding as well. The opportunity to teach, mentor, lead and pour into the next generation creates value for everyone involved— everybody wins!

The future is bright and we can't wait to see the ideas, energy, and perspective this class brings to the table.

Welcome to the SMC team, Jillian, Zack, Tim, Thomas, Peter & Elliot— it's going to be an amazing summer!

Whether the application involves corrosive atmospheres, electrical connections, cryogenic temperatures, thermal cycling, or high-load fl**ge assemblies, selecting the right Belleville material can directly impact joint reliability and long-term performance.

Different materials are engineered for different demands— from general industrial applications to severe-duty environments requiring corrosion resistance, high-temperature capability, or high preload retention.

Our Belleville Material Guide provides a side-by-side comparison of common material options including carbon, stainless, superalloy and tool steel, highlighting temperature capabilities, magnetic properties, and recommended application environments to help simplify material selection conversations.

Over the past several months, we've had the pleasure of having Anna, a West Geauga Local Schools senior, on our team as an engineering intern, and couldn't be more appreciative of the energy, curiosity, and dedication she brought with her each day.

Throughout her time with us, Anna contributed to a variety of engineering, process improvement, and manufacturing-related initiatives, gaining valuable real-world experience while making a meaningful impact along the way. We've enjoyed watching her grow in confidence and capability with each new challenge.

As Anna prepares for her next chapter this summer and heads off to study Mechanical Engineering at Cleveland State University this fall, we wish her nothing but success in the future. Best of luck, Anna-- we know you'll do great things!

Did you know...not every application fits a standard washer?

At Solon Manufacturing Co., we engineer and manufacture custom Solon Belleville Springs & Washers when off-the-shelf solutions fall short. Whether you're working with tight space constraints, extreme temperatures, or demanding load requirements, we collaborate directly with your team to get it right.

From load-deflection curves to material selection and finishes, every detail is intentional, because in critical applications, reliability isn't optional.

If you're trying to maintain preload, manage vibration, or solve for thermal expansion in a compact assembly, we should connect.

We were honored to welcome members of the PMA Naples Executive Networking Group to SMC as part of their annual event.

As part of the Precision Metalforming Association, these groups bring together leaders across the metalforming industry to share insights and best practices, so it was a privilege to open our doors and showcase what we do.

We couldn't be more proud of our team, from the planning and preparations behind the scenes to confidently sharing our processes, capabilities, and culture, they represented Solon at its best.

There's something special about seeing our work through the eyes of others, and being reminded just how incredible our team truly is.

Thank you to the PMA Naples group for spending time with us!

Happy Earth Day, 2026! 🌎🌿

This year, we’re proud to support the Foundation for Geauga Parks through our Preserving the Path Forward initiative. It’s a natural next step—pun intended—as their work helps preserve green spaces, expand environmental education, maintain trails and park infrastructure, and support conservation efforts that benefit the communities where our employees live and work.

If you’d like to join us in supporting their efforts, you can learn more or make a contribution here:

In LNG and refinery applications, bolted joints are operating in conditions that are constantly changing—thermal expansion, pressure cycling, vibration, and embedment all play a role.

Over time, these factors contribute to a loss of bolt preload. Not because the joint was designed or installed incorrectly, but because maintaining a constant clamp load in a dynamic system is inherently difficult.

Belleville washers are one way to address this at the joint level. As a conical spring, a Belleville introduces a defined load vs. deflection curve into the assembly. When properly specified, it allows the joint to absorb movement and compensate for relaxation while maintaining a more consistent bolt force.

From an engineering standpoint, this means:
▪️ More stable gasket stress over time
▪️ Reduced sensitivity to thermal cycling and embedment
▪️ Less reliance on retorquing as a maintenance strategy

It’s a relatively simple component, but it adds a level of predictability to bolted joint performance that rigid assemblies can’t provide on their own.

Check out this short overview of how this applies in LNG and refinery environments: https://bit.ly/3Q7pKgz

03/13/2026

In electrical systems, grounding and bonding connections create a low-resistance path that allows fault current to safely travel through equipment and into the ground. These connections are critical in switchgear, busbars, transformers, cabinets, and equipment frames.

Over time, several factors can compromise the integrity of that bolted connection: differential thermal expansion as materials heat and cool, embedment relaxation as surfaces settle under load, vibration from equipment or the surrounding environment, and oxidation or corrosion at the contact interface.

When clamping force drops, contact resistance increases, leading to heat buildup, unreliable grounding, or system risk. One way engineers address this is by adding Belleville washers to the joint.

Bellevilles act like compact disc springs by maintaining bolt preload even as the joint experiences thermal cycling, settling, or vibration. The result is more consistent contact pressure and improved long-term reliability of the electrical connection.

Your system is critical. Maintain the pressure with a Belleville.
