🐝 What Do We Do With Our Queenless NUCs This Time of Year? 🍂

As we sell queens from our 5-frame NUC boxes, we’re left with small colonies without queens. With winter approaching, we don’t want to leave these colonies queenless!

Our solution? The Newspaper Combine Method! 📰🐝

We combine the queenless NUC with an established, queenright colony by placing a sheet of newspaper between them. The newspaper creates a temporary barrier, allowing the bees time to adjust to each other’s scent as they gradually chew through it and unite into one stronger colony.

🟡 Notice the yellow rock on top of the hive?

That’s our simple, visible reminder that we need to come back later this week and check on the combination to make sure everything went smoothly!

Sometimes the simplest management techniques are the most effective!

Thinking about becoming a beekeeper? Or maybe you’ve already started and want to build a stronger foundation? Now is the perfect time to begin!

We are excited to announce that registration is now open for our Fall Washington State Beekeepers Association (WASBA) Beginning Beekeeper Class!

🐝 Just Another Beautiful Day in the Apiary! 🍯

There’s nothing quite like taking a stroll through the bee yard, listening to the hum of the bees, and checking on how the colonies are doing!

The bees are looking good, the colonies are strong, and everyone seems to be busy doing what bees do best! 🐝🌼

Sometimes it’s nice to slow down, enjoy the sights and sounds of the apiary, and appreciate these amazing little creatures.

Many of you know that our son-in-law, Austin, has been taking care of much of the beekeeping over the last couple of years while Alan has undergone a few major surgeries. Managing this many bees is a big undertaking, and Austin has done an incredible job — growing our operation to 240 colonies! 🐝

This year has been especially fun because a couple of our grandsons have really enjoyed helping out in the bee yard. There is something pretty special about watching the next generation get curious about bees and want to be a part of what we do.

Kallan even got to join us at the beekeeping conference this year, and he had a great time! He especially loved seeing the photos and videos from Fred Dunn. We also had the opportunity to visit with Dr. Priya from WSU Bee Program , and Kallan got her to sign a copy of Young Zoologist: Honey Bee.

Now, in between conference sessions, you may have seen Kallan break dancing, running around, and playing in the hallway like any kid would. 😂 But what really surprised us was seeing him sit down next to his dad and actually listen and take in some of the information being shared during the conference.

Those are the moments that make us smile.

Beekeeping has always been about more than honey and hives. It is about learning, teaching, family, and passing something meaningful on to the next generation. 🐝❤️

We were thrilled to acquire a third piece of George Hansen’s beautiful encaustic artwork at the Pacific Northwest Beekeeping Conference fundraising auction! 🐝🍯

This one, featuring a spoonful of honey, has already found the perfect home in our kitchen. It looks absolutely beautiful there and makes a wonderful addition to the other pieces we’ve collected.

Such a special way to support the conference and bring home a piece of bee-inspired art at the same time. 💛

A big thank you to Andy from Magnolia Bee & Supply in Texas for making the trip to the conference!

We really appreciate him helping with the Hivekeepers demonstration and taking the time to talk with beekeepers about this exciting new product that we’re now carrying at Woods Bee Co.

It was great having Andy there to answer questions, share his knowledge, and help everyone get a closer look at how HiveKeepers works.

We had a great few days at the Pacific Northwest Beekeeping Conference! 🐝

It’s always good to spend time with other beekeepers, catch up with old friends, meet new people, and hear different ideas and perspectives.

We wrapped up the conference with an hour-long speaker panel and questions from the audience, which is always fun. Put a group of beekeepers together with a microphone and you never quite know where the conversation will go! 😄

Really enjoyed the weekend and all the great conversations about bees and beekeeping.
