ICON Engineering, Inc. ICON Engineering, Inc. was founded in January 1997 as a locally owned and operated consulting engineering firm.

ICON is a Colorado-based civil engineering firm founded in 1997 specializing in stormwater, stream, floodplain, master planning, parks, trails, and roadway design. Our areas of service include nearly all aspects of civil engineering. We have widely respected capabilities in both public and private sector infrastructure planning, design, and construction management. We are perhaps best known for ou

r expertise in water resources, with primary emphasis in drainage, flood control design, and floodplain mapping activities.

A huge thank you to SEMSWA for featuring ICON at their Aurora Youth Water Festival booth and to the City of Boulder for hosting Operation Water Festival! Our team had a blast using our sediment transport table to show young learners how the built environment shapes our rivers and streams. Through hands-on experiments, kids explored real-world land use decisions involving urban planning, floodplain safety, and open space conservation—while seeing firsthand how those choices impact water systems.

Events like these are a fantastic way to spark curiosity about water resources engineering, planning, and science, and to introduce the next generation to exciting career paths that help protect and shape our communities. 🌊💧🚧

A group of ICON’ers participated in the nearly sold out 2026 Cherry Creek Race for the Watershed – a 5k walk and fun run supporting clean water in our communities and the CASFM scholarship fund. It was a beautiful Colorado morning at the Cherry Creek State Park and our very own Zach Purfurst took the win for best costume!

We had a great time getting our hands dirty! A group of ICON team members recently joined a volunteer day with the Village Exchange Center at Village Farms in Aurora—right in the heart of our Westerly Creek Stream Restoration project near Stanley Marketplace.

Our crew pitched in to set up vegetable planters, tackle some stubborn weeds, and plant a variety of crops throughout the garden. Along the way, we also got to share a bit about the work we’re doing just beyond the farm’s fence—connecting with fellow volunteers and bringing our project to life in a whole new way.

This volunteer day was sponsored by the CASFM Outreach & Training Committee. For more information about the Village Farm at Stanley: https://villageexchangecenter.org/programs/village-farm-at-stanley

Summit County is an area of Colorado that is visited and loved from far and wide. It is home to Breckenridge, Keystone, Silverthorne, and the famous Dillon and Green Mountain Reservoirs. ICON has had the opportunity to work for the Blue River Watershed Group alongside JW Associates to develop a Wildfire Ready Action Plan (WRAP), creating a tool to help assess pre-fire prevention measures and post-fire recovery strategies to reduce disaster in an event of a wildfire. This project is being done with support from the CWCB and with input from stakeholders.
ICON assisted in the hydraulics and hydrology studies of the WRAP project which addressed pre- and post-fire stormwater flows around Blue River in the case where a wildfire and storm event occur. A county wide HEC-HMS model was developed to study the physical changes by watershed for pre- and post-fire conditions. The model was able to show which areas of Summit County would have the highest changes in hydrology post-fire, guiding ICON to then develop HEC-RAS models of the specific high-risk areas. The hydraulics models dictate the existing areas conditions, which can help with development of future infrastructure to mitigate possible flooding due to changes in the soil and land use after a wildfire. When the WRAP project is fully developed, it will be used as a tool by residents and officials to be proactive about possible wildfire events, knowing which locations in their area are most at risk for disaster and mitigating the effects beforehand.

The Future Engineered

ICON is excited to help empower Colorado’s future workforce through real world experience. This spring, we welcomed two students from the Work Based Learning Program who will gain hands on exposure as they shadow our engineering team.

The WBL program opens doors for students — from job shadows to paid internships and apprenticeships — giving them the chance to explore careers, build skills, and step confidently into their futures.

And when it comes to shaping tomorrow, engineering students are at the forefront. They’re not just learning how things work — they’re designing what comes next. ICON is proud to stand alongside educators, employers, and policymakers who are creating meaningful pathways for every learner and every future innovator.

Celebrating Engineers Week at 11,000 Feet

The Eisenhower–Johnson Memorial Tunnel isn’t just a road through the Rockies — it’s a symbol of bold engineering. President Eisenhower’s vision inspired a new generation of engineers who pushed the limits of design, teamwork, and determination to carve a path through the Continental Divide.

This Engineers Week, we honor the innovators who make the impossible feel routine. From mountain tunnels to everyday infrastructure, engineers keep our world moving — literally.
Here’s to the problem solvers, builders, thinkers, and doers.
