🔦

Antenna Measurement Intern Yuhui Xu, based in our Cedar Park, TX, office, is a University of Houston Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Research Assistant and PhD Candidate. Two of his favorite courses, Electromagnetic Fields and Microwave Engineering, laid the groundwork for concepts — including wave equations and spatial spectrum analysis — that he now uses in antenna measurements and near-field to far-field transformations at ETS-Lindgren!

One of Yuhui’s proudest academic achievements was solving a challenging near-field to far-field transformation problem by developing a custom NUFFT-based correction approach. After weeks of debugging and optimization, he successfully reconstructed an antenna pattern that closely matched the reference simulation, significantly improving accuracy while giving him valuable hands-on experience in antenna measurement algorithms.

Along the way, Yuhui’s learned an important lesson: Don’t be afraid of imperfect data or buggy code. Real-world measurements are rarely perfect, and engineering often involves understanding noise, correcting errors, and refining results through careful analysis. In his experience, every bug and unexpected result presents an opportunity to learn something new about the underlying physics.

Yuhui’s advice for students thinking of entering the electrical and computer engineering field: “Build a strong foundation in theory, but do not underestimate the importance of hands-on experience. Many concepts in electromagnetics only became meaningful to me when I applied them to real measurement and simulation problems. Learning how to analyze data, debug code, and improve algorithms is just as important as understanding physics itself. Every challenge is an opportunity to deepen your understanding and grow as an engineer!”

We’re lucky you’ve chosen to grow with us, Yuhui! 📡🧮🧑‍🎓

🔦

BIM/Revit Modeling Intern Sarah Joseph, based in our Wood Dale, IL, office, is a rising senior majoring in architectural studies with a minor in business at the University of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. As a first-year attending a studio class, she experienced a shock to her system. Though she enjoys collaborating, Sarah found herself comparing her work to that of her classmates, leading to a negative mindset. Fortunately, over time, she built strong relationships with her peers and came to see them as sources of inspiration and learning. She also found opportunities to share her knowledge with them, as well!

Another essential lesson: The importance of taking initiative in her own education. Sarah believes the more you invest in your education, the more you gain in return. Because professors and employers might prefer, say, different software platforms and approaches, she’s learned it’s essential to diversify her skills and knowledge on her own, outside the classroom.

A member of the founding chapter of the Architecture Professional Fraternity Alpha Rho Chi, Sarah also had the opportunity to study architecture in Spain. During the program, she formed a close connection with a professor and mentor from Barcelona who introduced her to a new way of thinking about architecture: a people-focused approach centered on creating buildings that are not only beautiful, but also necessary.

Sarah’s advice for students thinking of entering the architecture field: “There are so many different things you can do with a degree in architecture — continue your education or enter the workforce, which can be stressful, but at the same time a relief. There is no wrong answer. Your success is based on the work and passion you put into what you do. Whatever you decide, as long as you put 100% in, I believe you can be successful!”

Thanks for traveling our way, Sarah! 🏛️✍️🧑‍🎨🧑‍💻
