While attending Oklahoma State University (OSU), ETS-Lindgren Marketing Intern Kelsi Welbig discovered one class in particular — Practical and Interpersonal Skills through the Spears School of Business — left a lasting impression. Focused on communication, networking and relationship-building, the course strengthened skills she now applies daily in meetings, collaboration and workplace interactions at ETS-Lindgren.
Her academic journey also led her to step outside her comfort zone in an unexpected way. Last fall, she was accepted into OSU’s Center for Sales and Service Excellence program, a prestigious opportunity allowing students to earn a sales certificate alongside their degree while competing in sales competitions and gaining hands-on industry experience. Although naturally outgoing, she admits sales was initially an area she felt hesitant to pursue. Through the program, however, she discovered a genuine passion for sales while further strengthening her marketing and management background.
Looking back, she wishes she had realized earlier just how important it is to branch out and try new things. Exploring unfamiliar venues, joining organizations and taking risks, she says, can reveal strengths and areas for growth that may otherwise go undiscovered. Those experiences not only help build confidence, but also create meaningful connections and open doors for the future.
As she continues building her career in marketing, authenticity remains one of her biggest guiding principles. She encourages other students entering the field to embrace their individuality, stay open to challenges and not fear failure.
She believes failure plays an important role in growth. Rather than viewing setbacks negatively, she sees them as opportunities to learn, gain experience and broaden your perspective — all valuable qualities for long-term success in the marketing world.
“Marketing is made up of people with different personalities, perspectives and backgrounds,” she says. “Staying true to yourself while being open to new opportunities will help set you up for success in the marketing world!”
We're glad to have you back for your second internship, Kelsi! 📈🧾🧑💼
