Last week brought widespread soaking rains to Texas and the Deep South. The rain gave a much-needed boost to drought areas and eased conditions across portions of Texas, the lower Mississippi Valley, and the Tennessee Valley. Drought remained mostly unchanged in southeastern Alabama, Georgia, and northwestern Florida where soil moisture and streamflows are still very low. Lighter rain and cooler temperatures slowed drought in the Northeast and improved conditions in Maine. Cool dry weather across the Plains and Midwest allowed fieldwork to move forward even as drought expanded on the Plains. Hot dry conditions worsened drought in Arizona and northwestern Washington while late rains in northern California did little for the low snowpack. Check the latest U.S. drought map for full details.
