4WG90 Transmission is mostly back together. Lots of fiddly little bits left in order to clean all of the solenoids, replace all of their orings, and install them, but it's getting close!

Tech tip. Torque striping/sealing can save you a lot of headaches. It's cheap insurance on critical fasteners and will let you sleep better at night.

Thanks for the help with parts on this transmission and thanks for trusting us with this project!

When I was a kid I took a lot of things apart to see how they worked. Now that I'm an adult I take apart bigger, more expensive things to see how they work 🤣

As far as automotive parts go, torque converters are one of the only pieces I still treat as a "black box" and I'd like to change that, at least a little bit.

I don't think I'll be offering rebuild services any time soon, but it is fun to take one apart. I'm reasonably confident that I could be successful in disassembling, replacing seals and bearings, and reassembling an otherwise functional converter if I had to. Reinforcing one, or modifying the stall speed, etc. is a different story, especially without some sort of dyno to validate the changes.

In the midst of a dash top replacement on this second gen Dodge. A new lower dash would've added nearly $2k to this job and that wasn't in the budget for the customer, so we're hot stapling and plastic welding up all of the lower dash structure as we go. It's not ideal, but most of this is hidden dash structure anyway. New dash top should arrive in the next day or two from

Briefly touching on pump curves and a real world pump/nozzle sizing example.

My goal was to pick an operating point near the max pressure the pump could develop (on the flat-ish part of the pump curve) with the maximum flow rate before the "knee" and the pressure starts dropping off rapidly.

Spent less time in the shop today than I expected, but I did manage to get another VW case and heads from Stephen Brannan for his notchback build and picked up a set of 317 heads for the 5.3L build from marketplace.

The 317 heads were originally fitted on the 6.0L motors and have 71cc chambers vs the 61cc chambers on the 706 heads. This should make them perfect for a 5.7L build with flat top pistons 😁😁

Gen 3 5.3L motor is completely disassembled and all of the parts we'll be re-using are cleaned up.

I really want to swap in Gen 4 rods and bore it out to 5.7L, but that would likely add $1k+ to the rotating assembly with the additional weight (requiring mallory metal for balance) and that's just not in the budget for my customer, nor is it realistic for the end goal of this motor (mild performance bump over stock for a 2005 suburban)

It'll probably just get some 0.020" over hypereutectic pistons and a torque/towing cam with factory rods, etc.

Still need to tidy up the wiring just a little bit. I decided the 3d printed guards are good enough for now, and if they ever give me trouble I'll spend the time to make them out of metal.

I'm not really sure why all the commercial parts washer baskets I could find were over $100. That seemed excessive for something whose entire job is to prevent small parts from falling into the sump, so I tossed one together with some leftover cage wire. So far so good!
