Our Menard USA project in Butler, PA is now featured as a case study by Speedrack Products Group Ltd. . Floor space was tight, so we built up instead of out: a selective pallet racking system that added storage within the existing footprint, with direct access to every pallet. Dock bumpers are the cheapest insurance in the building and the most ignored thing on it.

New dock pads installed at RIDC O'Hara in Pittsburgh, by our own crew.

Every trailer that backs in hits the building. The bumper is the only thing between a loaded trailer and your dock face. Once it is worn flat, that force goes into the concrete and the door frame — and then the repair is masonry work, not a bumper.

A bumper is a consumable. It is supposed to wear out. Replacing it on schedule costs very little compared to waiting.

Five tons of lifting capacity that never touches your building.

Used Spanco 5-ton gantry crane, on our floor in Carnegie. 20' beam, 18'7" clear between the legs, 10'10" under the beam, 6'6" leg width. Trolley included, hoist not included. 8" swivel locking casters.

$4,000.

A gantry carries its own load to the floor, so it works where the roof structure will not take a crane — or where the lift point keeps moving. Lock the casters and it is a fixed station. Unlock them and it follows the work.

Selective pallet racking installed for Menard USA in Butler, PA.

The constraint was floor space. It usually is. The building was the size it was, and the pallet count still needed to go up.

Two things get you there: go up, and lay it out properly. Height is the cheapest capacity in any warehouse — you already pay for the space above your head. Layout decides how many positions actually fit in the footprint you have.

More pallet positions in the same square footage. No addition, no new lease.
