It’s not overthinking, it’s pattern recognition.

Years of experience start to connect small details to bigger systems, and once you see it that way, it’s hard to look at a site any differently.

Engineer brain never really turns off.

Project lookback: Pedestrian Underpass at Tree Farm.

This connection created a safer, more direct way for people to move between Willits and the Tree Farm area without crossing Highway 82. The result is improved pedestrian safety, better access to transit, and stronger connectivity for the surrounding community.

One thing people don’t expect: access roads are often the most complex part of a project.

They have to work in all conditions, for all users, and hold up over time.

One question we get all the time: why is building in the mountains more complex?

Short answer, the site drives everything. Elevation, access, drainage, weather, and materials all add layers that don’t exist in flatter environments. It’s not just building something that works, it’s building something that holds up over time.

Celebrating Taylor Wiese’s 1-year anniversary with RFE.

In his first year, Taylor has quickly become a solid part of the team and the work we do every day. Glad to have him on board.

From early infiltration studies to construction in the river, this project has been in motion for years.

Maggie walks through the work happening at the Fryingpan River Crossing as crews replace the existing sewer line and build a system designed to last.

Environmental-based design, working with the environment, not against it.

In the mountains, the site drives the design. Drainage patterns, snowmelt, groundwater, and existing waterways all shape how a project needs to perform over time.

At RFE, that means understanding how a system works before making changes to it. A lot of the work happens early, thinking through how a site will respond not just during typical conditions, but during the events that really test it.

When it’s done right, the design isn’t obvious. Water moves where it should. Systems perform the way they’re supposed to. And the project holds up over time.

That’s the goal.
