The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM) recently published NCHRP Web-Only Document 319, "Roadside Safety Analysis Program (RSAP) Update" -- https://www.nap.edu/catalog/26521/roadside-safety-analysis-program-rsap-update . This report was the product of NCHRP 22-27 which Roadsafe LLC completed in 2012. The project also resulted in a new version of the program, RSAPv3.
RSAPv3 can be used to analyze roadside designs and performs both benefit-cost and risk assessment analyses to help engineers select the best roadside alternatives. RSAPv3 addresses fixed object crashes, terrain related rollovers, shielding fixed objects with guardrails, selecting appropriate bridge rails and terminals as well as many other roadside design situations.
The Roadsafe team completely re-wrote the program and made numerous improvements. The program is provided as an Excel macro enabled template so anyone with MS Excel can download and use it. The User's Manual, Engineer's Manual, Programmer's Manual, and the program itself are available at no charge at https://rsap.roadsafellc.com/. Example problems and installation instructions are also available on the Roadsafe RSAPv3 website.
Roadsafe has provided RSAPv3 training to a number of DOTs, utility companies, and consultants since the program first was released in 2012. If your agency or company is interested in learning more about RSAPv3 or hosting training, please contact us.
RSAP is an encroachment-based computer software tool for cost-effectiveness evaluation of roadside safety improvements originally developed under NCHRP Project 22-9(1). Subsequently, some improvements were made, bugs corrected and patches installed under NCHRP Project 22-9(2). A third NCHRP proj...
