We found some unexpected guests out close to the ranch and need your help! πΈ
We're not 100% sure of the exact species, and we want to make sure we handle this right. If you're from California Department of Fish & Wildlife, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, or a local conservation group and can help us identify them, please reach out! π
We believe they might be a type of burrowing frog, common near water sources like our Colorado River canals.π Fun facts about burrowing frogs:
* They spend most of their lives underground, only surfacing after heavy rain or irrigation
* The Couch's Spadefoot, found right here in Imperial County, can stay buried for months and emerge within hours of sensing water
* The Colorado River Toad is known to hang around irrigation ditches, canals, and farm water sources
* Some burrowing frog species in California are protected under state and federal endangered species laws
Give us a shout if you think you know what they are!
