Happy Fourth of July from all of us at Tom's Hay Farm! 🇺🇸

We're taking the day off to celebrate this great country with our families, so the farm will be closed tomorrow (4th of July).

Every bale we grow starts over a thousand miles away as snow on Rocky Mountain peaks.

That snowmelt becomes the Colorado River, travels through seven states, passes through Hoover Dam, flows into the All-American Canal, and reaches our fields right here in through the Imperial Irrigation District. That's the water we flood irrigate with every single day.

This is part 1 of a four-part series on the Colorado River.

We found some unexpected guests out close to the ranch and need your help! 🐸


We're not 100% sure of the exact species, and we want to make sure we handle this right. If you're from California Department of Fish & Wildlife, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, or a local conservation group and can help us identify them, please reach out! 🙏

We believe they might be a type of burrowing frog, common near water sources like our Colorado River canals.🔍 Fun facts about burrowing frogs:

* They spend most of their lives underground, only surfacing after heavy rain or irrigation
* The Couch's Spadefoot, found right here in Imperial County, can stay buried for months and emerge within hours of sensing water
* The Colorado River Toad is known to hang around irrigation ditches, canals, and farm water sources
* Some burrowing frog species in California are protected under state and federal endangered species laws

🎉 Happy Birthday to everyone's favorite, our manager, Jose!! 🎂🤠

This one's for the man who can stack hay like it's nothing, fix just about anything before breakfast, and still show up the next morning ready to do it all over again.

Jose has been the backbone of this operation for over a decade now. The fields know his boots, the equipment knows his hands, and the crew knows they can count on him every single day.

He's not just a hard worker, he's the kind of person that makes this ranch what it is. The kind you don't find often, and when you do, you don't let go.
