✨ Layers of potatoes, cream, and cheese baked to perfection…a little fancy, all comfort!
🥔 Simple Potato Au Gratin
Ingredients:
2 lbs red or yellow potatoes, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons flour
2 cups milk
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided
Optional: ½ teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions:
1️⃣ Preheat oven
Preheat oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
2️⃣ Make the cheese sauce
Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute. Slowly add milk, whisking until smooth. Stir in salt, pepper, garlic powder (if using), and 1½ cups of the cheese. Cook until melted and creamy.
3️⃣ Layer potatoes
Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.
4️⃣ Top with cheese
Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup cheese evenly over the top.
5️⃣ Bake
Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20–25 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
6️⃣ Rest and serve
Let stand for 10 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken.
Pro Tip:
Use a mandoline or sharp knife to slice potatoes evenly so they cook uniformly and become perfectly tender.
