A great day of MedTech conversations at MPP MN!

Jeff Pelkofer joined industry experts today to talk polymer processing, in-process measurement and what it takes to build more capable, consistent manufacturing processes.

One theme that came through clearly: measurement creates the most value when it helps manufacturers understand and control the process, not simply inspect the finished part. The panel also discussed how technologies like cavity-pressure sensing, inline measurement and closed-loop controls can help identify variation earlier and improve consistency and yield.

Experience matters, especially when the materials don’t naturally want to work together.

MRPC’s Brunson Parish, Director of Technology Development, and Denise Sawdey, Process Engineer, recently shared their expertise with Medical Product Outsourcing in a MedTech Makers Q&A focused on the challenges and opportunities of multi-material molding.

Understanding material behavior is a science, and material flow ultimately impacts whether a molded component meets the requirements of the finished medical device.

Speed, heat, cooling, and flow pattern all shift as material moves through the cavity and none of it happens evenly. If you manage those factors well, you will get a strong, consistent part. If you get them wrong, you get weld lines, air traps, or warping.

On September 24, MRPC team members Brunson Parish, Denise Sawdey and Jeff Randall joined the Medical Device Materials & Manufacturing course, part of the professional Master’s program in medical device innovation and entrepreneurship jointly offered by UNC-Chapel Hill and NC State.

The program is designed to help future medtech leaders identify unmet clinical needs, develop solutions and build a path toward commercialization. We’re proud to support that mission by giving students a closer look at what happens when a medical device concept moves into manufacturing and how material selection, tooling, mold design and process decisions can influence what is ultimately possible.

During the session, the MRPC team used a second camera to demonstrate specific molding and material techniques while sharing practical manufacturing insights with the class.

This marks the fifth year MRPC has contributed to the program, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to help connect engineering education with the realities of bringing medical devices to life.
