I am just checking in with my followers. I had to redo the saddle horn because it was not quite straight. I guess I had been in to much of a hurry to get it ready for Christmas. Hoot even noticed that it was not straight so it had to be changed.
I am in Omak Washington right now visiting with family. On one of my outings I was able to spend some time with Tom Tugaw, a saddle maker here in Omak. He has spent a life time building and repairing saddles and equipment. What an inspiring little bit of time. I told him about some of the scariest parts of building Hoots saddle for me were, and Tom would just get up and pick up some little piece of string or something, and show me his trick's he has learned over the years. I was so amazed and I am ready to start my next saddle.
Tom told me in his years as a leather crafter, there were between 20 and 30 leather shops around the area. Now there is only about 5. He told me when he was a teenager, he wanted this job at a cattle ranch but he had have two saddles for the job, and he had only one. He got busy and built himself the saddle he needed. It was cool to see the pride in his eyes when he says, that he still has that saddle today.
Tom talks about how it is sad, that saddle makers are a dying breed. We have turned pure craftsmanship into machine made saddles.

Well I am back from spending time with family and hunting season. I got back to work on the saddle. There were prayers answered when I started fitting the seat today. It's not finished yet but thank goodness I didn't mess up on the fit. Got the front and back cantle on. I am getting excited to see the finished saddle. Thanks for just sharing my pictures.

Started a new saddle. This saddle is being constructed on an sf bowman saddle tree. It has a two piece metal strainer. I am putting this post on here to show what Jim had taught me to do. This will be the first saddle that I have had to make by myself. I can just here him in heaven telling me it's looking good. I am so thankful that I can still feel a part of him and his talent. Be patient for more posts it takes awhile to accomplish the finished saddle.

This is was my first western saddle that I made. Jim was my teacher while it was under construction.
I always use what Jim taught me, the finest Weaver leather, solid brass or stainless steal parts. Tree's from Bowden saddle tree's. This was made on a 16" SF Bowmen. This saddle was for a guy so there is not any pretty blind on it. Just a nice comfortable saddle to ride in for hours at a time.
