In Rosh HaAyin, Israel, Derech Afar Technologies installed new sewer lines beneath a busy intersection where open-cut construction wasn’t a safe or viable option. With existing utilities at multiple depths, strict line and grade requirements, and the need to maintain 24/7 traffic, precision was critical.

Using an Akkerman GBM 339A Jacking Frame, guidance system, and custom pullback reamers, crews successfully completed three sewer alignments with accurate installation and minimal disruption to surrounding businesses and infrastructure.

The result? A safe, efficient installation with verified accuracy across all bores and minimal impact to the surrounding environment.

For the Highway 16 Tyhee Passing Lane project in Telkwa, BC, The Crossing Group installed two culverts beneath an active highway for the Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure—navigating tight spacing, minimal cover, and strict grade tolerances.

Using Akkerman GBM 240A Jacking Frame and Guidance System, crews installed 48-in. and 96-in. steel casing through varying ground conditions, maintaining precise line and grade while working just feet apart and under live traffic.

The result? Both culverts completed successfully with no settlement and all tolerances met—demonstrating controlled, accurate installation in a challenging environment.

Akkerman was proud to support student teams at the Not-a-Boring Competition hosted by The Boring Company, mentoring future engineers as they designed and built their own tunnel boring machines.

Our team worked closely with students from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Virginia Tech, sharing real-world insight and experience to help guide their success. With teams competing from around the world, it was exciting to see both teams deliver standout performances—including a Rookie of the Year award for the Boring Illini and a Champion award for Virginia Tech’s Diggeridoos.

We’re proud to invest in the future of trenchless construction by supporting the engineers who will shape what’s next!

Underground utilities may be out of sight, but their installation plays a critical role in keeping transportation networks moving. Trenchless construction allows contractors to install pipelines beneath roads, railways, and runways without disrupting traffic or compromising surface structures.

By preserving engineered ground conditions, supporting proper drainage, and minimizing downtime, trenchless methods provide a safer, more efficient solution for crossing critical infrastructure.

The Akkerman Bentonite Injection System (ABIS) delivers precise, controlled injection to reduce jacking forces and support longer, more efficient pipe jacking installations. With touch screen monitoring, operators can manage flow, pressure, and injection sequences in real time.

Designed for accuracy and safety, ABIS distributes bentonite at optimal intervals while keeping operators out of the tunnel.

Back in 2015, Nada Pacific, Corp. used an Akkerman SL44 MTBM to install four runs of 42-in. (DN1000) HOBAS® pipe totaling 2,400-LF. for the Georgia Street Interceptor in Amarillo, TX.

Working in the middle of a heavily traveled roadway, the crew navigated tight staging conditions while maintaining an impressive average production rate of 80-LF. per shift.

A great example of precision, productivity, and trenchless performance in challenging urban environments!

Horizontal auger boring—also known as jack-and-bore—is a trenchless method used to install steel casing between a launch and reception shaft, with excavation handled by a rotating cutterhead and augers that remove spoil through the casing.

This method can be used in both guided and un-guided applications, offering reliable accuracy in a variety of non-pressurized ground conditions with improved line and grade control when guided.

Akkerman auger boring systems are designed to integrate with leading equipment manufacturers and support a wide range of casing installations: https://bit.ly/4htQml2
