DC Water continues essential rehabilitation work on a key section of the Potomac Interceptor along Clara Barton Parkway—one of the region’s largest and most critical wastewater systems.

This time-lapse captures the sliplining process, where a new 72-in. pipe is installed inside an existing 78-in. pipeline originally placed into service in 1963. This upgrade strengthens a vital corridor that moves wastewater from the Dulles area to the Blue Plains facility, helping ensure reliable flow, system integrity, and long-term capacity for the region.

Projects like this highlight the importance of maintaining and upgrading infrastructure that millions of residents, businesses, and visitors depend on every day!

Microtunneling is a highly specialized trenchless construction method that provides precise, controlled installation of underground infrastructure with minimal surface disruption.

Akkerman is the only North American manufacturer of both pilot tube and slurry microtunneling systems, designed to deliver accuracy and reliability across a wide range of ground conditions and project requirements.

This featured project, by Lametti & Sons, Inc., demonstrates how microtunneling supports safe, efficient infrastructure installation while minimizing impact at the surface.

Engineering & Construction Innovations, Inc. - ECI completed the Lake Elmo West Project in Lake Elmo, MN as part of MCES’s regional sewer expansion, adding nearly a mile of large-diameter sewer to serve Lake Elmo, Oakdale, and Woodbury.

Using an Akkerman SL74P MTBM with MT875K jacking frame, the team installed 74-in. OD steel casing in drives up to 1,350-LF. To reduce risk ahead of tunneling, an Akkerman 240A Guided Boring System was used to probe and identify potential obstructions.

The final segment, completed in July 2025, successfully expanded sewer capacity to support continued regional growth—another strong example of precision microtunneling and guided boring performance in demanding conditions!

In 1986, Akkerman produced the first of many 5000 Pump Units for long-time customer, Pacific Boring, Inc. of Caruthers, CA to conquer difficult project in Oklahoma.

Inspired by Dave Cline’s mentorship, Maynard Akkerman led the development efforts of the infamous pump unit design while supporting technical efforts in the field, including a 1,600-LF., 90-in. RCP crossing in Western Plains, OK.

Featured alongside Maynard Akkerman is Dave Cline of Pacific Boring while they visited TBMs in Japan. Photos like these serve as a reminder of the people and partnerships that laid the groundwork for where the industry is today, and the legacy that continues to guide our work into the future.
