We are in Broomfield, which puts us inside a morning's drive of most of the Front Range.

Denver, Boulder, Longmont, Fort Collins, Loveland, Greeley, Arvada, Westminster, Thornton, Lakewood, Aurora, Centennial, Castle Rock, Commerce City, Colorado Springs and Pueblo.

Distance matters more than people expect on custom metal parts. Not because of freight cost, but because you can stand at the press and look at your own part with the people running it. Problems that take three emails to describe take about four minutes in person.

Nobody grows up planning to be a toolmaker. Most people find it.

It is a trade you learn standing next to someone who already knows it, and it rewards patience and precision more than speed. If you like the idea of building the thing that makes the thing, it is a good career and there are not enough people doing it.

We train at the bench in Broomfield, the way we always have.

You formed it to 90 degrees. It came out at 92.

That is springback, and it is not a mistake. Metal bends in two ways at once: it deforms permanently, and it flexes. Release the pressure and the flex comes back.

It gets worse with harder material, higher strength, larger bend radius and thinner stock. Aluminum springs back more than mild steel at the same thickness, and so does stainless. Shops account for it by overbending, but the amount depends on the exact material and temper. That is why substituting material is a tooling decision.

Send us the print before you release it.

Most of what makes a part expensive is decided in CAD, weeks before anyone asks for a quote. Hole sizes, bend radii, how close a feature sits to an edge, which alloy and temper got specified. By the time it reaches a shop, those choices are frozen and the price reflects them.

We would rather look at a drawing while it can still change. It costs you nothing.

What actually drives the cost of a laser cut part?

Not the size of it, usually. It is how many times the laser has to stop, pierce and start again. A part with forty small holes can cost more to cut than a much larger part with a plain outline.

The full breakdown is on the blog, including what to change on the drawing if the number comes back higher than you expected.

A progressive die does not make a part in one hit.

The strip moves through station after station, and each one does a little of the work. Pierce here, form there, cut it free at the end.

By the time the strip reaches the end of the tool, the part is finished and it never stopped moving.

Sheet metal fabrication in Broomfield.

Cutting, punching and forming, done in one building. We take a flat sheet to a formed part: laser or turret for the profile, press brake for the bends.

What we do not do is pretend to be everything. Welding, plating, powder coating and paint are separate trades with separate equipment, and we would rather point you at a specialist than do them badly. Knowing where a shop stops is as useful as knowing where it starts.

Meet the people who build your tooling.

Tyler and Nick own Perry Tool & Die, and it has been in the family since 1962. Tyler still works the bench when a job needs him there: reading a print, cutting steel to a few thousandths, building a tool that makes the same part again and again without drifting.

When we say we build our own dies, this is what we mean. Not a department somewhere. This bench, this building in Broomfield, and people whose name is on the door.

The same bend, in the same material, cracks one way and holds the other.

That is grain direction, and it is invisible on the drawing. Rolled sheet has a grain left over from how the mill made it. Bending across it is more forgiving. Bending along it puts the crack risk right on the bend line.

It shows up worst on aluminum, on tighter radii, and on harder tempers. Call out grain direction on the print when the bend is tight, and let the shop nest to it.

Hard tooling, built in the same building that runs it.

A progressive die is a serious investment, and where it gets built determines what happens for the rest of its working life. If your tool was built overseas, a mid-program repair means shipping it, waiting on someone else's schedule, and hoping the intent survived the handoff.

Ours are designed and built here in Broomfield by the people who will also run them.
