📦📈 Case Study: Freestanding Storage Platform System for Leading Telecommunications Company

Background:
A leading Fortune 500 telecommunications company located in Bellmawr, NJ faced a storage challenge. Their DC was nearing its storage capacity. With an extensive network and the need for quick inventory turnover, the company sought to optimize their warehouse space.

Objective:
Maximize storage capacity within the current facility, cater to increasing inventory demands, streamline operations, and avoid costs and disruptions associated with relocation or building expansion.

Solution:
Storage Coordinators proposed a Freestanding Storage Platform System. This solution provided:

1. Vertical Space Utilization: A second-tier was added, maximizing vertical space and increasing storage potential without altering the existing structure.
2. Operational Efficiency: The new platform level facilitated the creation of specialized zones for various tasks.
3. Safety and Accessibility: The freestanding mezzanine came equipped with IBC stairs and handrails - ensuring safe and easy access to the platform.

Pushback Rack Flow System: The platform incorporated a Pushback Rack Flow System. This LIFO approach ensures efficient space utilization by allowing deep-lane storage of pallets. Pre-owned skatewheel tracks resulted in a 50% cost savings. Center rail was added to each lane which evenly distributes the pallet weight and accommodates suboptimal pallets.

Results:

1. Enhanced Storage Capacity: The combined mezzanine and Pushback Rack Flow System significantly increased storage capacity - negating the need for facility expansion. Storage: 10 Lanes 11 Pallets Deep Flow Rail - 3 Lanes 10 Pallets Deep Flow Rail - storing (140) total pallet positions.
2. Improved Workflow: Efficient storage layout and inventory retrieval led to improved inventory management and streamlined order processing.
3. Cost Efficiency: By utilizing the existing facility space and incorporating cost-saving measures like pre-owned skatewheel material, flooring, and stairs, the company averted major expenses related to relocation or constructing a new warehouse.
4. Adaptability: The modular mezzanine design offers flexibility for future adjustments or expansions as company needs evolve.

Conclusion:
The Freestanding Storage Platform Mezzanine System combined with the Pushback Rack Flow System's efficiency became a valuable asset. Q: Why would a warehouse manager want to redesign their warehouse layout?
A: There are a few reasons: to increase the storage capacity of your warehouse, increase productivity & throughput, reduce the cost of goods stored & picked in the facility, and better organization.

Q: How do I know when it's time to consider redesigning my warehouse?
A: Here are 3 common scenarios that will usually trigger a need for a redesign:

- If your warehouse aisles and/or dock are congested with pallets
- When your racking system(s) has reached 95% or greater storage density.
- If you are leasing additional warehouse space off-site.

Q: How can a new warehouse layout help me with ROI?
A: Congested aisles can cause lost time & efficiencies. Inefficiencies can cause stock-outs in prime pick locations, which impairs operations, & costs money. A messy warehouse can also cause a decrease in productivity and increased labor costs by paying out more overtime. Money can also be wasted by having to lease additional warehouse space off-site. When resolved, can contribute to reducing operating costs, & improving the bottom line.

Q: What upsides can an optimized warehouse layout provide?
A: By increasing storage & efficiency, the cost of goods moved through the warehouse compared to cost of the facility drops to the bottom line. The cost of the facility remains fixed. If we can store more, move more, & improve efficiency, the cost per unit through the warehouse goes down.
