A survey from Tata Consultancy Services and Google Cloud found a wide gap between ambition and deployment, with 68 percent of manufacturers still stuck in pilots or not deployed at all. Robots on the floor are the visible part. The harder work is the data and process discipline behind them.

IMTS wrapped up in Chicago last week.

The largest manufacturing technology show in the Western Hemisphere filled McCormick Place with industrial AI, automation, additive manufacturing, digital twins, and metrology. Manufacturing technology orders were up 28.9 percent through the first four months of 2026, and first quarter labor productivity rose 3.2 percent on flat hours. The show is a good read on where production investment is actually going.

Gen Z is looking at the trades. Manufacturers need to be ready when they look.

Automation didn't replace the welders. It made room for more of them.

Tate deployed 58 collaborative welding robots across three plants and reported a twelvefold increase in output per welder. At the same time, the company grew its team of certified welders. It is a useful counterpoint to the idea that automation and skilled trades are competing for the same floor space.
