Leaving Your Dock in the Water This Winter? Clearance Matters.

Michigan winters bring more than cold temperatures. Freeze-and-thaw cycles and moving ice can place significant stress on waterfront structures.

As water freezes, it expands. Ice can form around pilings and beneath dock structures, then shift and refreeze as temperatures change. If a dock sits too close to the waterline, that movement can create additional pressure on the structure.

That’s why proper clearance above the waterline is an important consideration when designing a dock intended to remain in the water through winter.
