Designed by S20M and ZProekt Architecture and developed by Rybak Development, construction on the Arloparc building on 126 East 86th Street has just reached completion. The building includes 28 luxury condominium units, along with commercial space on the ground floor, blending elegance with modern amenities to meet the demands of Upper East Side living.

This 20-story tower’s façade is designed to evoke a timeless, upscale appearance that harmonizes with the architectural context of the Upper East Side neighborhood. To achieve this, the building utilizes a combination of modern façade systems with traditionally-appearing materials. A Corium brick system was used for its efficiency and adaptability, allowing for rapid installation while maintaining the classic masonry appearance. Limestone veneer adds a sense of refinement, providing a robust and enduring presence to the building. The traditional brick veneer enhances the building’s durability and ease of construction. These systems and materials were selectively applied to the building to optimize constructability, efficiency, durability, and long-term performance without compromising aesthetic quality.

Saint-Tropez, known as the ground floor of Pier 17, is the epitome of the village’s transformation into a vibrant destination hub of hospitality, food and beverage, and retail spaces. Designed by RockwellGroup and Mancini Duffy, the space’s enclosure can be adapted to be activated year-round. Its completely custom-designed hydraulic overhead door system enables Saint-Tropez to transition effortlessly between an open-air space during warmer seasons and an enclosed space during colder seasons.

Along with the new custom hydraulic overhead doors, Büro Ehring provides construction engineering design for the remaining new custom enclosures of Saint-Tropez. This includes structural analysis and design, detailed shop drawing production, performing thermal analyses, and conducting condensation risk assessments for the bronze-clad custom curtain wall enclosures on the north and south and a 30-feet bronze-clad custom pivot door on the west.

The conversion of the Lincoln Correctional Facility into residential housing transcends mere physical transformation. Our proposal for Tandy House acts as a catalyst for fundamental change in the community of Harlem and Central Park. The transformation opens the conversation on addressing the need for housing, while fostering a sense of identity, connection, opportunity, and sustainability.

Rather than demolishing the structure, which holds distinctive characteristics and histories, our proposal advocates for the preservation of the rear portion of the development. In its place, we introduce a new core in a non-invasive approach, prioritizing efficiency and sustainability. The core facilitates the implementation of a transfer deck, enabling the integration of prefabricated housing modules. By preserving existing structures and reducing embodied carbon in construction and building materials, we contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage.

From this revitalized foundation emerges a tower with intentional setbacks on all sides, offering breathing space within the urban fabric. Inspired by New York's historical window designs, our climate-responsive facade shields against excess sunlight while harnessing winter sun exposure to passively heat the building. The undulating curvature of the façade decreases in depth, ensuring optimal light quality on the north side.

Sustainability lies at the heart of our architectural vision, encompassing every phase from construction to operation. We prioritize three main aspects: Passive House principles, reducing embodied carbon, and minimizing operational carbon. Through the strategic integration of preservation, innovative construction methods, and low-impact materials, we are not merely designing a building but pioneering the path toward the future of sustainable construction.

320 South Canal, also known as the BMO Tower, is a 51-story landmark office tower located south of Chicago Union Station. At the heart of this marvel are the tower’s signature V-shaped structural transfers. Behind these metal-clad columns lies a captivating 3-story vertical structural glass podium façade that engages the ground floor of the building to the plaza.

Büro Ehring provides structural engineering and building envelope consulting services for the metal cladding of the (6) V-shaped structural columns, enhancing both the east and west facades of the tower. Additionally, we conducted structural engineering peer reviews for the vertical glass podium wall of laminated glass panels and fins, including its portal frame structures, glazed revolving doors, and their connections to the main building structure.

The Roxbury Creative Compound, designed by Scalar Architecture, comprises two primary structures: a residence and a workshop/studio space, meticulously crafted to integrate with the surrounding terrain while minimizing environmental impact. The thoughtful relationship between programmatic elements and site characteristics is particularly evident in the interstitial spaces within the buildings.

The workshop features a mezzanine that enhances spatial openness, complemented by strategically placed skylights in both its flat and pitched roofs, optimizing natural lighting throughout. Structural design incorporates steel columns, beams, and rod X-braces, ensuring stability and architectural integrity.

Conversely, the design of the residence presented more challenges due to window placement limitations that rendered traditional lateral force-resisting systems impractical. To address this, X cross-bracing was employed, providing robust structural support while preserving design aesthetics. Additionally, the residence was engineered to accommodate a cantilevered dining room extending toward a nearby lake, adding a layer of complexity to the project's structure.

The Buffalo AKG Art Museum is home to one of the oldest public art museums in the United States, collecting and exhibiting art since 1862. After undergoing its recent expansion project, the museum has opened its newest jewel-box addition, The Gundlach Building, and its connecting pedestrian walkway, John J. Albright Bridge, to the public.

The intricate curvilinear design of the building and bridge posed challenges for its custom stick-built steel and glass facade enclosure but was made possible by working closely with the façade specialty contractor. The defining feature of The Gundlach Building is the translucent glazed ‘veil’ diagrid that has been optimized to reduce complexity in its geometry, fabrication, constructability, and cost. Connecting to it is the John J. Albright Bridge, featuring curved and flat mirrored glass configured in a winding motion, seamlessly linking back to the rest of the campus.

Thank you to everyone involved in the project! It’s an honor to have contributed to this significant milestone in the museum’s journey.

Beginning on the 7th floor and terminating on the building’s penthouse level, 21 Garden Street’s 20-feet cantilever hovers well over the adjacent townhouse’s roof as the main expression of the project.

One of the most complex issues the design and construction team encountered during the final stages of the design phases was how we were going to support the cantilever formwork.

Ultimately, Peri Formwork System, Inc. were brought on board and tasked with providing a solution to the cantilever formwork in question. Temporary modular steel trusses were installed and anchored into the building’s newly constructed roof.

Vertical cables, hung off the trusses, support the crash deck in preparation for the construction of concrete diagonals, the cantilever transfer deck, and the stories above. The overhead truss system proves to be versatile because of its capacity to allow for vertical adjustment of the formwork as the concrete is poured and deflects due to concrete weight, if needed.

Diagonal cables supporting the crash deck, along with connections back onto the structure’s main core keep the platform from swaying in the wind.
