A little B&O history for you on the 48th anniversary of
Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane crash.

October 20, 1977

Once the survivors and the bodies were recovered from the crash site, the NTSB, the FAA, and the insurance companies stepped in to determine why the plane crashed. B&O Welding and Machine Works (as it was known then) aided in the recovery of the airplane remains, and stored the wreckage at the B&O shop in Brookhaven, MS. Once the investigation was complete, the aircraft remains were sold for scrap. Pieces of the plane still exist, having been "salvaged" by zealous fans.

We just finished replacing railings in three stair towers at Alcorn State University.
The old railings - the black railings and probably from the 1970s - left a lot to be desired in regard to safety and usability.
The new guard and grab rails are a huge upgrade, with a continuous handhold up three levels for two of the stair towers, and four levels for the third stair tower.
For three outdoor landings, new guard rails were retrofitted to the original 1970s railings.
Very glad to be a part of another Paul Jackson & Son, Inc. project!

You never know what the day will bring….
Restoring a very old footed container. It is certainly attractive and well made, mostly from cast copper.
One leg had given way, another was hanging on but bent, several swags were loose, some broken, and one ram had a drooping horn.
There is evidence of previous attempts to put it all right - though far from satisfactory.
Long story short, this photo shows the vessel as we near the end of our repair.

Just completed - a steel cable railing for a bank in Hattiesburg.
The brightness of the 3/16” cables contrasts with the matte black finish of the steel railing framework and stairs.
We fabricated the railing to fit onto already built stair stringers.
A nice, sleek, modern look!

On a visit to a Belhaven home last week to discuss a railing up a steep set of front steps, I took a look around at other ironwork that we built for the homeowners.
Once back at the shop, I discovered that it was nearly TWENTY years ago!

A tale of two recent railing jobs…
One leads up the steps to Christ Episcopal Church, situated on a knoll in Church Hill Mississippi. The gothic arch and cross design was inspired by a beautiful door inside the circa 1850 church building.
The second protects a drop-off at the mushroom research facility at Alcorn State University.
Both railings, as different as they look in form, provide a measure of safety to those that use them…. whether it is climbing steps to a charming church or doing agricultural research.

See the pretty scroll on the left?
It is a part of a beautiful bronze chandelier that once hung in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
See the pretty scroll on the right?
It is one we made from bronze to replicate a missing scroll from the historic chandelier mentioned above.
Today, the chandelier - with both the old scroll and the newly recreated scroll - hangs inside a grand home in the Magnolia State.
It's still beautiful - and now it is complete.

The canopy on the Pike County Health Department looks deceptively simple - yet there is a good bit of steel structure supporting & framing it.
Lots of measurements and what are called 'shop drawings' are prepared before any fabrication is begun. The second photo is a sample of a portion of the drawings for the 'simple' canopy beams, angles, plates, and bolts, all built by us nearly a year ago....
All the work on the building facade makes the building look fresh and new. It was a privilege to have a part in sprucing up an old-looking property!
