A latch that needs a pep talk to return has already made Monday harder.

In industrial equipment, a torsion spring can provide the return torque behind a latch or lever. Getting that movement right takes more than matching the coil diameter.

Engineers need to consider:

• Torque at the installed and fully actuated positions
• Working angle and preload
• Leg geometry and engagement
• Clearance around the shaft throughout travel
• Required cycle life and operating environment

Too little return torque can leave a mechanism short of its intended position. Too much can increase operating effort.
