Arbor Upcycle is the only company dedicated to salvaging and milling downed trees in San Francisco. After a tree is removed due to storm damage or urban development Arbor Upcycle will strive to salvage the tree for its timber. The tree is then milled into slabs on-site with our portable Alaskan Mill or at our warehouse with our thin kerf bandsaw mill. The 3” wood slabs are then stickered and set aside to cure until they are stable enough to build with or sell. Arbor Upcycle founder Remy Hummer and custom craftsman Clint Stewart design and build furniture exclusively from San Francisco trees that would be typically destined for the landfill. From the perspective of a certified arborist Remy labors to retain the wild spirit and character of the tree in each of his pieces. Clint uses his extensive background in custom craftsmanship to aid our customers in the creation of their dream. Every piece is identified by its true species and neighborhood in San Francisco where the tree once stood. Upcycling is the creative reuse of waste materials, transforming unwanted by-products into new and improved materials of better quality. When upcycling trees there is also an added environmental value: carbon sequestration. When a tree is removed in the urban areas it will be brought to a green waste center where the tree will eventually be ground up into mulch. As the mulch breaks down its carbon reserves are released into the atmosphere contributing to the green house gas affect. Arbor Upcycle is not only salvaging valuable timber and sequestering carbon off gassing but also reclaiming some of San Francisco’s oldest residing residents and in doing so is preserving SF’s heritage in the face of a rapidly changing urban landscape.
