Of all the fluids in a generator, fuel is the hardest to check. Oil has a dipstick. Coolant has a visible reservoir. A fuel tank has neither.

Soot and debris on the bottom of the tank can let a unit crank up fine, then slowly die down once it pulls that in. If it runs dry, the air has to be worked out of the system before it'll run again, and that's downtime.

Gage pulls a sample on a tank nobody had inspected or filled in six years. It's part of winter prep, along with oil, coolant and the battery.

We asked a critical infrastructure facility manager what fails when it gets cold. The list is short.

David keeps the generators running behind a pump house that supplies water to a whole footprint of homes and businesses. Block heaters fail quite often, he says. Then battery pads, then diesel that gels. Those are the parts that quit on the first cold start of the season, and his crew runs more weekly inspections in winter than in summer because of it.

Built in 2009, approximately 420 hours. Low hours tell you how long a generator ran, not whether it can carry its load, so we put this one on a load bank. It carried the full 180kW and passed.

Unit 093418, a 180kW Generac with a John Deere diesel, 480 volt three phase, in a weatherproof enclosure.

480 volt three phase is the service most commercial and industrial buildings run on, which makes this a fit for any site that can't wait out an outage. It carries 333 gallons of fuel on board, so there's no gas line to depend on, and the enclosure lets it sit outside on a pad without a generator room.

A battery warmer can’t do much for an old battery, and a block heater can't fix coolant that's broken down.

We followed our techs across a few service calls to show what winter prep actually looks like. It comes down to three steps: know where you're starting, know what you're running, and stress-test the system under load. On one call, the service tag showed roughly 12 minutes of run time since the last service.

Nearly 141,000 of FPL's 168,000 customers in Escambia County lost power when Hurricane Isaias came through. That's Pensacola's home county, and it's where our branch is.

Isaias made landfall near Destin Friday night as a Category 2 with 105 mph winds. Our Pensacola crew was on standby ahead of it in case a facility or a home generator needed service. Once the storm passed, they went out.

Utility crews restore hospitals, 911 centers and fire stations first, then work through everyone else. Two days after landfall, about 300,000 customers in the western Panhandle were still waiting.

This generator weighs 35,000 pounds and carries 3690 gallons of diesel in the base.

Unit 093932, a 1000kW Kohler/Rehlko with an MTU diesel, built in 2014, 277/480 volt three phase, standby rated, enclosed, at our Brighton yard. It has approximately 142 hours on it.

A set this size is hard to judge from photos. The walkaround goes around the whole unit so you can see its condition before it ships.

Reconnectable single or three phase means this generator can match the service in your building, instead of making your building match it.

Unit 093835, a 260kW Hipower HTW with a 2020 John Deere diesel, approximately 630 hours, 480 volt, enclosed, standby rated. We put it on a load bank at its full 260kW rating and it passed.

It suits loads that can't wait out an outage, like cold storage compressors, water pumps, and server cooling. The 1000 gallon tank is in the base, so the fuel is on board and there's no gas line to depend on. The enclosure lets it sit outside on a pad without a generator room.

No two of these come in the same. Different makes, different models, different damage, and most of them have been sitting outside somewhere for years before we get them.

So there's no drawing to work from. Scott spent about five months on this build and it was the first time he'd cut a generator enclosure apart and put it back together. He worked off other units he'd seen over the years and container builds the shop had done before.

Every one gets an honest look first, then a judgment on what it's actually going to take.

The kW is the easy part. The pad, the gate it comes through, and the crane on both ends are what actually hold a project up.

Unit 093934 is a 500kW Cummins diesel, 2014, 345 hours, enclosed, sitting in Jacksonville. It's a twelve and a half ton machine, so the site work gets scoped off the footprint rather than the capacity.
