The grill got more attention than anything else in the yard this week. Labor Day's coming, so we closed up early at our Jacksonville shop and fed the guys who spend all summer in the heat keeping other people's backup power running.

One of our techs said it plainly with a burger in his hand. The calls that start coming in once the weather turns, are almost always from sites that could've handled it in July. Fuel that's been sitting since spring. Batteries in their third year. A unit nobody's put a load on since the last test. None of that is hard to deal with in September. All of it is hard to deal with at two in the morning with the grid down.

That's the whole reason September is Preparedness Month. It's the last quiet stretch before everybody needs the same thing all at once.

Open skid, so everything on this 810kW Kohler is right there in the open. No panels to pull to get at the engine, and nothing in the way when it comes time to service it. It does mean this one goes inside, or you build the housing around it.

2000 build, 748 hours, MTU Detroit Diesel R1637K35, 277/480v three-phase, 1218 amps, 1200 amp breaker, 10 leads, 10,500 pounds.

Ready to ship from our Brighton yard.

748 hours on a 2000 build. That works out to about a month of runtime across twenty-five years, which is what standby duty looks like when the power mostly stays on.

Low hours tell you it hasn't worked hard. The load bank tells you it still can. This 810kW Kohler pulled its rated load and held it at our Brighton yard.

We ran it on the load bank with the doors wide open, which is the only reason it's this loud on the video. Shut them and the attenuated enclosure pulls a lot of that back down.

Generac badge on the enclosure, Perkins 404D-22TA underneath it. 2021 build, zero hours, 200 gallon tank, 30kW at 120/208 three phase.

Full rated load through the run, voltage and frequency steady, temps and pressures right where they should be.

Call 877-866-6895 if you want a small diesel that won't wake the neighborhood.

Two sites can order the same generator and need two different machines. The set is only half the equation.

Voltage, enclosure, fuel delivery, breaker setup, all of that gets designed around the utility and the building it's feeding, not around the generator. So the peripherals are what decide whether the set is useful once it gets on site.

We keep as much of that in house as we can, for two reasons. Modifying a set we already have and testing it here is a lot cheaper than routing it through a third party. And the wait on a third party is longer than most people expect. Most fab shops nationwide are booked months out right now.

Every generator needs something a little different. Most of it we can do in house.

Call 877-866-6895 if you need a set matched to your service and not just your load.

A 3516C Cat is normally a hot ticket item. This one sat for 18 months.

Plenty of operations would love to put two megawatts like this to work, but an open skid comes with tradeoffs. It has to go indoors, and fuel becomes a separate problem to solve on site. So we retrofit it onto a tank and inside an enclosure, and now it can go do a real job.

The fit was the hard part. New isolator holes so the frame carried weight everywhere, radiator pushed forward for clearance. The radiator valves stuck out far enough to catch the enclosure coming down, so Bob put a suction on it, dropped the drain plug and capped it without losing the coolant. Ducting around the radiator had to be built tight, because those louvers aren't motorized. They open on fan air, nothing else.

Call 877-866-6895 and we'll build it to fit your site, tested to spec before it ships.

Natural gas means this 140kW Generac never needs a fuel delivery. The gas line feeds it directly, so there's no tank to fill and no diesel sitting in storage going stale between outages.

It ran a full load bank test at our Brighton yard and held its rated load. 2018 build, 323 hours, three-phase 120/208v, weatherproof enclosure.

Call 877-866-6895 if natural gas is on the table for your standby power.

This 2MW Cat sat on an open skid in our Brighton inventory for 18 months. Open skid works for indoor installs, but most operations need a generator that can sit outside on a pad.

We had an enclosure in inventory at low cost that had housed a 3516C, so it was close enough to work with limited fabrication.

The engine had to move forward for radiator shrouding, which meant drilling new isolator holes so the frame carried weight in the right places. Drain valves on the radiator face were going to hit the enclosure wall, so those came off and got relocated. Both exhaust runs had to line up with a muffler mounted inside the enclosure, because moving it afterward means pulling the enclosure back off.

All measured before the enclosure ever left the ground. Built out, this unit weighs over 80,000 pounds. There's no easy do-over at that weight.

Same generator. Different product. It ships on its own fuel tank, and it can sit outside on a pad.

There's a Mitsubishi V12 under this Kohler's hood. The S12A2 is a twelve cylinder diesel, and that's what's sitting behind the 760kW rating.

429 hours on it since 2015. Weatherproof enclosure, 277/480v three phase, 1,200 amp breaker, and a 1,791 gallon tank under the whole thing. It's in Brighton now.

Call 877-866-6895 if you need 760kW and want to know exactly what's turning the alternator.

The drain valves on the front of this radiator were going to hit the enclosure when we set it down.

Standard fix is to drain the system, pull the valves, relocate the drain, refill. That's about 100 gallons of coolant on this 2MW Cat.

Bob put a suction device on the radiator cap instead. It held the coolant in place while he pulled the plug and capped it. A couple droplets came out.

Small call. It's the difference between a half-day detour and moving on to the enclosure set.
