Standoffs are a mechanical device used to hold two components at a given distance from each other.

Generally speaking, a standoff is normally chosen over spacers when longer size distances are required.

Male - Female Standoffs are used when 1 of the 2 mating components are internally threaded.

If you need more leverage, Hex Standoffs can be gripped with a wrench or nut setter device. This is unlike a round style that may be more aesthetic but lacks a flat surface for grip.

-Aluminum is popular for its lightweight / strength compromise. It is non-magnetic, performs well in severe temperatures, and has insulating properties.

-Brass is used in making high-quality standoffs. It is conductive, resists corrosion, and is non-magnetic. It is costlier and heavier than aluminum and is usually plated zinc or nickle.

The "Bucking" Skill Gap:

For traditional solid rivets (the kind you see on historic structures like the Eiffel Tower or the hull of the Titanic), installation is an art form. It requires two people: one on the outside using a pneumatic hammer and one on the inside with a "bucking bar."

The person with the bucking bar must hold their heavy steel block perfectly still against the rivet tail while the hammer smashes the other end. If the bucking bar isn't held at the exact right angle and pressure, the rivet will "smile" (deform unevenly), creating a structural weak point.

Modern blind rivets have largely automated this process, but the skill involved in traditional solid riveting remains a highly respected trade.

A blind rivet features a mandrel (a nail-like stem) inside a hollow rivet body. When you pull the mandrel with a rivet gun, the body expands against the back side of the material, clamping it securely without ever needing to touch that back surface.

Very Informative you say? Did you know?

Fastener threads come in two major types: machine screw threads and spaced screw threads. The threaded region of a fastener is part of a larger system referred to as the "body" of a screw, which contains threads and any unthreaded portion of the cylinder, as well as both the point and shank of a fastener.

Threads are identified and categorized differently depending on the unit of measurement, with the Unified (Inch) Screw Thread System being commonly used in the US and Canada, while the ISO Metric system is used predominantly in other parts of the world.

Coarse and fine pitch threads have their own unique advantages, and "Unified" fastener threads are measured in terms of how many thread revolutions occur within one inch of the threaded region while "Metric" threads are measured in distance from one crest to the next, known as the "thread pitch."

Standard Thread Length Rule: Hex Head Cap Screws

When you’re buying a bolt that is 6 inches or shorter, the industry follows a specific ratio to determine how much of that shank is actually threaded. The formula is simple, but non-negotiable:

Thread Length = (2 X Diameter) + 1/4"

If you have a 1/4-20 x 1" bolt:
Diameter: 1/4"
Diameter X 2 = 1/2"
Add 1/4" = Total thread length is 3/4".

That leaves you with a 1/4" "grip" (or unthreaded shank). If your total material is thicker than that 1/4" unthreaded section, you could have a problem...

The "Full Thread" Exception:

This is where the many people get tripped up. Sometimes the formula gives you a number that is equal to or greater than the actual length of the bolt.

Rule: If (2 X Diameter) + 1/4" is equal to or greater than the length, you get a Full Thread bolt.

Example: You need a 1/2" diameter bolt that is only 1" long.
(2 X 1/2") + 1/4" = 1.25"

Since 1.25" is greater than the 1" bolt length, the bolt will be threaded all the way to the head.

But why does this matter to you?

Grip Length: You need the unthreaded "shank" to sit where the shear force is. Threads are weak in shear; solid steel is strong.

Clearance: If you don't have enough thread, you can't tighten the nut down far enough to actually clamp your materials together.

Efficiency: Knowing this math means you stop buying the wrong parts and stop wasting time on "return trips" to the supplier.

In Summary:
Under 6": (2 X D) + 1/4" = Thread Length
Short Bolts: If the math exceeds the length, it’s fully threaded.

Don't Let Your Screws Eat Your Aluminum!

Ever wonder why some outdoor projects start looking "crusty" or falling apart after just one season? It might be Galvanic Corrosion.

When you mix the wrong metals, like putting bare steel or brass screws into aluminum, a chemical reaction occurs that literally eats the aluminum away. This is especially true if your project gets wet or lives near the ocean!

Which fasteners should you use?

Aluminum Screws: The safest bet! Same-to-same metal means zero reaction. However, this option is often not cost effective or difficult to find.

Stainless Steel: The most common corrosion resistant material. Just be sure to use preventative measures like rubber washers or paint to keep the connection dry and separated. Stainless steel has a strong galvanic corrosion effect when mixed with aluminum

Carbon Steel with Finish: These are often coated in zinc, which acts as a "buffer" to protect the aluminum. This is often the most cost effective solution when pairing with aluminum. Carbon steel fasteners can also be coated in a variety of finishes to help prevent contact and galvanic corrosion.

Avoid: Bare carbon steel and brass. They are too reactive and will cause your project to fail prematurely.

Bottom Line: Keep your metals compatible, or keep them separated by a layer of finish, paint, or especially a rubber washer!
