A cap hex bolt is an externally threaded fastener.

Available in 1/4" diameter or larger, with a trimmed hex head and a washer face on the bearing surface.

They’re partially threaded and made from heat-treated steel — giving them a higher tensile strength than Grade 2 (yield stress roughly 81–92 ksi, depending on diameter).

You can spot them by the three radial lines on the head! Simply add 2 to radial lines to get your grade: 3 lines + 2 = Grade 5.

Ever had your Phillips screwdriver slip out of a screw and figured you got a bad batch? Turns out that slip is on purpose.

Henry Phillips designed the drive back in the 1930s to "cam out" when you apply too much torque. So when your bit pops loose, the screw isn't failing — it's telling you to ease up.

That's the kind of thing that makes sense once you know how drives work. Quick rundown:

Slotted is the oldest drive still in use. Militaries liked it because you could turn one with a fingernail if you had to.

Phillips slips at high torque by design (see above).

Torx, hex, and square are what you want when you need real torque without any slip.

The drive is the part of the fastener your tool grips — people mix it up with the head all the time, but they're not the same thing.

Standard carriage bolts use a square neck to grip wood… but what happens when you're fastening into Metal? That square shoulder cannot pass through a circular hole.

Enter the RIBBED NECK carriage bolt.

Instead of a square shoulder, these feature a series of raised ribs (serrations) right under the head. As you tighten the nut, those ribs dig in and LOCK the bolt against rotation — even in a round hole. One-wrench installation, no spinning, no holding the head.

🔹 Ribs resist rotation so you can tighten from one side
