42% of New York Schools Have Tested Positive for Elevated Lead in Drinking Water. Today's Adirondack Explorer article highlights findings from a September 2026 NYPIRG report, underscoring a serious challenge for New York school administrators and facilities managers.
Lead can enter drinking water through aging plumbing, fixtures, and solder. While NY has strengthened testing requirements—lowering the action level from 15 to 5 parts per billion—identifying contamination is only the beginning.
Addressing the problem requires identifying contamination sources, evaluating remediation options, and incorporating solutions into facility maintenance and renovation plans. Early action can help protect students and staff while minimizing costs and disruptions. The Adirondack Explorer article is well worth reading; we've placed a link in the comments.
