🌲 Species Spotlight: Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus)
Faintly resinous, non-porous, with an exceptionally straight and uniform grain. Used extensively for colonial country furniture and shipping crates, and historically prized for royal ship masts. Native to Eastern North America.
Start your schedule between 100-110°F, leaning toward 100°F the greener the lumber is. White pine can handle a pretty aggressive drying rate without defects — nearly 12%/day — but exceeding 115-120°F above fiber saturation (28% MC) is what causes brown or coffee stain. Keep the dry bulb lower until you hit that point for a whiter, brighter board. Once fiber saturation is reached, 120-140°F is safe, and you can run up to 160°F near the finish for pitch setting if your kiln supports it — that higher finish temp makes a big difference on sap/resin buildup on your milling equipment down the line.
Pine is also prone to uneven drying with a wide MC spread at the end of the schedule. Adding humidity back in during the back half of drying helps keep boards from overdrying, and a spray system to hold a higher wet bulb can help if that's your main challenge. Target final MC: 11-12% for outdoor siding/paneling, 8-10% for indoor use.
The two stains to watch for: blue (denim) stain from not enough airflow early on, and brown (coffee) stain from too much heat while the wood's still wet. Size your vents, DH unit, and fans correctly and you'll avoid most of it.
Airflow-wise, pine can dry as low as 450-500 FPM, but 750-800 FPM gives the best, most consistent results. If you're air-drying ahead of the kiln, keep it covered from sun and rain, and orient it into the prevailing wind.
