Back to school!

This summer, we had the opportunity to welcome three student interns to JMW. We hit the trifecta with one student from Bozeman High, Gallatin High and Belgrade High!

They spent the summer alongside our team learning what happens inside a working fabrication shop: safety, tools and equipment, welding and fabrication, reading drawings, teamwork, problem solving and probably a few lessons you won’t find in a classroom.

Thank you for spending your summer with us, guys. We loved having you!

Partnerships between education and the trades are an important part of building the workforce of tomorrow and Manufacturing Montana.

The best projects usually start with, ‘Can you build this?’

Meet the STINGER®! More than 1,700 hours of design, fabrication, assembly and refinement have gone into our partnership with Hēsion Sciences to take Stinger from concept to a full-scale, field-tested machine.

Designed to automate ready-mix drum washouts in about 4 minutes while using 70%+ less water, Stinger headed out for real-world testing. And then… it got hit by a concrete truck!

Not exactly part of the test plan, but that’s R&D! Stinger came back to JMW with some battle scars, a few lessons learned and an opportunity to make it even better. Repairs and customer-driven modifications complete, it’s already back in the field for round two.

Build it. Test it. Hit it with a concrete truck. Learn from it. Make it better. These are our favorite projects.

Trust the weld. Then test it anyway.

This custom fuel tank was fabricated, welded, then pressure tested for leaks before leaving our shop.

Build it right. Verify it. Send it.

Yesterday we were a small part of the governor’s celebration at the State Capitol with the MSU Football team and the signing of a proclamation to declare January 20, 2026, as Bobcat Day in Montana.

We created plaques for both the Governor and Coach Brent Vigen to mark the National Football Title!

Happy Bobcat Day!

Today was a spark!

A spark for students, for our team, and for what’s possible when industry and education build together.

We’re incredibly thankful for our Johnson Metal Works team and our partnership with the Bozeman School District to help show this next generation the many avenues in manufacturing; welding, machining, project management, design, install, field scanning, and the real-world work that brings it all together.

Bozeman High + Gallatin High Welding Technology students toured the shop and saw the tube laser, CNC, press brake, spray booth, powerlift doors and the industrial, architectural, and structural projects we’re proud to build.

Big thank you to Governor Greg Gianforte and his team, along with Department of Labor and Industry Commissioner Sarah Swanson and Department of Commerce Director Marta Bertoglio, for joining us and supporting the momentum behind skilled trades and workforce development. And we can’t forget our incredible school partners, Career Coordinator Karl Schwartz and welding instructors Max Allmendinger and Jo Doolittle, for helping make the day happen. More to come!
