The American Shore & Beach Preservation Association's (ASBPA) 2024 National Coastal Conference was held from August 26 - 29th in Galveston, Texas. This event brings together coastal stakeholders, managers, and practitioners to learn the latest science, engineering, and policy needed to maintain and improve the health of our beachfront and estuarine shorelines and ecosystems. Woods Hole Group sent three members of our team including Lee Weishar, Mitchell Buck, and Justine Rooney. Lee is part of the leadership team who serves as a Vice President and 2024 Officer. Mitch presented on the marsh restoration work that he completed for Mattapoisett Neck Marsh system. Justine presented a poster on her recent work with the Town of Barnstable which is a multi-year effort to develop and implement coastal resiliency solutions for the Sandy Neck Beach Park.

🌊 Introducing NEMO: The Future of Small-Scale Fisheries Monitoring! 🌊

🐠 NEMO is the first all-in-one system designed specifically for small-scale fisheries. It offers hybrid global connectivity, utilizing GPRS/IoT networks in coastal areas and seamlessly switching to satellite systems when out of terrestrial range. This revolutionary system ensures comprehensive monitoring and protection of your fisheries.

🌎 NEMO features global coverage, automatic data collection of vessel movements, and continuous on-board storage for data integrity. It provides cost-effective sea-to-shore reporting, secure encrypted messages, and weather alerts. The system includes a request for assistance button and a buzzer for alerts on entry and exit of regulated zones.

πŸ›° Designed by CLS Group (Collecte Localisation Satellites), NEMO boasts a solar panel, rugged waterproof design (IP67), and is easy to use with its Plug-and-Fish functionality. It's tamper-proof, offers smart reporting, geofencing, and event alerts.
NEMO offers unmatched connectivity, security, and efficiency for small-scale fisheries. Stay connected, stay protected, and ensure sustainable fishing with NEMO!

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: North Nantasket Beach Resilience Dune Restoration Project in the Town of Hull

As part of the Town of Hull’s ongoing efforts to enhance coastal resiliency, we are excited to highlight the North Nantasket Beach Resilience Dune Restoration Project. This project, which focuses on restoring and fortifying key sections of the 2-mile-long primary dune along North Nantasket Beach, is vital for flood damage protection and providing a habitat for critical species. Christian Krahforst, our project lead, shares some of the highlights.

Key Accomplishments

131 to 145 Beach Avenue:

In this section, we led the design, permitting, and construction of a 400-foot stretch of primary coastal dune that had been severely degraded over the years due to its use as a parking area. This area was previously a significant storm flood pathway, and the restored dune now offers much-needed protection against flooding. Additionally, we designed and permitted a new waterfront access path for residents, ensuring safer and more convenient access to the beach.

23 to 53 Beach Avenue/Malta Street:

For this 800-foot section of degraded coastal dune, we completed the design and permitting phases, enabling the Town of Hull to secure a Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental AffairsCoastal Zone Management (CZM) Resiliency Grant. This funding was crucial for conducting the necessary field surveys and coastal process analysis. The construction of this section was successfully completed, resulting in improved dune continuity and enhanced protection against storm damage.

A Street:

In collaboration with our project partner Kleinfelder, we designed and permitted the restoration of a dune along with the installation of an ADA-compliant walkway and emergency access over a previously degraded section. This project was completed in 2021, providing essential flood protection while also improving public access to the beach.

These projects underscore our commitment to advancing coastal resilience and protecting vulnerable communities. We are proud to have played a pivotal role in making Hull’s shoreline more resilient to the impacts of climate change.
