Municipalities face a common challenge: transportation needs are pressing, but limited capacity and complex grant requirements can make it difficult to access available funding. At the 2026 MassDOT Transportation Innovation Conference a couple of weeks ago, Bryan Zimolka, PE, ENV SP, Senior Project Manager at Nitsch helped explore how we can help bridge the gap through targeted technical support! This initiative aims to empower local governments, ensuring they have the resources and knowledge to secure vital funding for transportation projects.

Nitsch Engineering is excited to share that our Dominion Energy Castlewood Stormwater Infrastructure Improvement Project, the first industrial facility in the U.S. to receive USGBC SITES Pre‑Certification, has earned a National Recognition Award in the 2026 ACEC Engineering Excellence Awards.

As prime civil engineer, Nitsch delivered resilient stormwater infrastructure for a 31‑acre operational utility facility in Richmond, VA, maintaining uninterrupted operations throughout construction while navigating complex permitting and floodplain constraints.

Castlewood now raises the bar for sustainable infrastructure in utility and industrial environments.

On March 20, our Richmond team spent the morning volunteering with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and Henrico HEART at Brook Road Park in Henrico County (Henrico County Government).

Together, we planted trees to help re‑establish the site’s Resource Protection Area, restoring a riparian buffer that was lost decades ago when the property was previously developed and later damaged by Hurricane Gaston. Today, the land has a new life as a public park, and rebuilding this buffer will improve water quality, reduce heat island impacts, manage stormwater, and support long‑term environmental and community health.

Each tree you see is a bareroot planting protected by a tube, a method that has shown a 75% survival rate locally – an example of how small actions can make a lasting difference over time. We are proud to contribute to the community in Richmond.

Today is Boston Bike to Work Day! We’re proud to support the event – including sponsoring this year's t-shirts! – and the broader push for multimodal transportation in our communities.

Creating safer, more accessible transportation options for all modes of travel is a core part of what we do; it’s always great to see that work in action.

Check out our team joining the ride this morning, along with a view of the event!
